Guest guest
Do any of you have a child on the spectrum going to college? My son is 20 years old and is studying accounting. He is going to Broward College and there are many issues, such as him signing up for mandatory classes and then dropping them, because he is scared to take them because he doesn't want to give a speech or attend gym class. He won't be able to graduate without these classes. Since he is passed his High School years he has to take courses which have nothing to do with his future career. Are there any programs near us (Broward County or nearby) for young adults on the spectrum where they do not have to take mandatory classes like speech and gym? The Office of Disability Services while trying to do whatever they can for him, really doesn't understand what is involved in these cases and my son is not functioning up to the level which he should be in. I am getting really frustrated with all of this, plus once your child is over the age of 18 no one will talk to me, by law they can only talk to him. And we know how that situation is. Please email me or respond to this topic if anyone has any ideas. Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Sandy
Guest guest
Lynn University has some really great resources you can access. Also on Friday, January 27th, Lynn and the Unicorn Foundation will be presenting "Transitions 2012": High School to Higher Education. This is a "MUST" for you and your son. Guest speakers include, Dr. Steve Shore, Rick Lavoie, Debbie Phelps, and many speakers with Asperger, ADD, etc. The cost is $40 and your son would be free. Special sessions for him include self advocacy, adjusting to college stress, etc. Apart from this, Lynn (Dr. Marsha Glines) can be a great resource to your son. Guest guest
I just want to send my thanks to all of you who answered my post. I will look into everything. Ari is re-registered to take the speech class and the "gym" class starting in January. I hope this time he will finish the classes.
