About Mays

African-American minister Mays laid the foundation for the civil

rights movement with his books and speeches and as a mentor to Luther

King. He was born in 1894 in South Carolina to tenant farmer parents. His study,

The Negro's Church, co-written with ph Nicholson, was a groundbreaking look

at the black religious experience. Mays served as president of Morehouse College

from 1940 to 1967. His work emphasized the inherent dignity in all people. He

died in 1984.
