I developed eczema a couple of years before PSC diagnosis. If it's really

eczema, you may need something more serious than hydrocortisone. I don't

remember what topical ointment I was given, but it really worked.

I've been able to keep it under control now with just lotion. If it's pruritis

(intense itching due to bile salt deposition), steroids will not help. I don't

have experience with PSC pruritis, but I don't think a rash is typically

associated with it, unless it's from scratching. I'm sure someone else will be

able to answer you better.

Glad you found us, but sorry you found us - keep asking questions, someone will

have the answer!

Hi!

We've been using hydrocort and it doesn't seem to be working..........long

story short, saw GI doc today and now she mentions the " itch that rashes " and

has really got me concerned......what IS this? Has anyone had experience with a

RASH?

Hi ;

If the rash is predominantly on the shins, knees, ankles or thighs,

then it is possible that it could be erythema nodosum, which is a

skin condition often associated with Crohn's disease or ulcerative

colitis:

Can you be more specific about where the rash is located, and how it

looks?

AGH!, then dermatologist said " no, eczema " . We've been using

Thank you Dave for your response.

I looked at the link you provided and it really looks nothing like

that. It's symmetrical on his body, ankles and shins, and also

elbows and forearms. It'll pop up in other odd places like near

knees, upper thighs, one time on his back (but symmetrical again on

shoulder blades), fronts of shoulders. He does have a nickel allergy

that has a gotten a little out of hand on his belly area (from his

pants) and honestly, it all looks the same to me...spread out red

bumps, they scab, go away, and come back. I'm wondering if this

could be an immune system thing, reacting to the bad nickel allergy

reaction on his belly. I'm bit clueless, just wondered if this type

of " rash " was typical of PSC at all.

We're gonna keep him in jogging pants, cont. w/ hydrocort, and doc

said if that doesn't work, we'll do a 10-day course of Prednisone.

If it's eczema, it'll clear up, but if not, she wants to do a liver

biopsy, UGH!

Thanks for your time,

Lynna Grace has been getting rashes since the beginning. They had her on steroid creams and bunches of other stuff that never really did much for her. A old timer told me to try baking soda in her bath - let me tell you what wonders it worked! When she starts complaining of being itchy too much we make her soak in the tub with about 1-2 cups full. (mommy to Lynna Grace 8yrs PSC 4/05)

Thank you .

May I ask what her rashes look like? Are they symmetrical on her

body at all? It's looking horrible on him right now and it's so

aggrevating " waiting it out " . I may try the baking soda, thanks.

Our son Tyler has had the white bumpy very dry feeling skin rashes even before the PSC diagnosis in Oct. 2006. The doctors with the transplant team examined him and said "Yes, that's the look and feel of liver disease patient's skin. He itches continually to the point of having to take Benadryl to sleep (not because it eases the itching, but because it makes him sleepy enough to sleep through the itching). You can watch him fidget in his sleep, scratch and rub himself all while sleeping. So, I know he isn't eased from itching.

He takes both Ursodiol and Rifampin but hasn't had itch relief. The rash continues and isn't contagious as scabies or anything else is. It's just the result of what is in his blood stream coming out through the pores of his skin.

Cindy, Mom to 15 yr. old with PSC dx in Oct. 2006Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape in the new year.
