Guest guest
I have had my 3rd choliangitis attack since Mid November. I had a stint placed in November after my Dr. cleaned the pus out of my bile duct. I felt good most of December and had my stint replaced with a larger stint hoping to dilate my duct a little more. I had another attack on the 2nd of Jan and did a week of Leviquin and felt better. It was a stressful week last week and I had another attack Sunday night and after Labs on Monday I started another round of Leviquin. My Dr. wants to put me on a maintenance dose of bactrim. I am scheduled to get this stint out on the 12th of Feb and am leaving for Hawaii on the 16th so I would really like to feel good and not have any problems. Is anyone maintenance antibiotics and if so do they have any problems? Thanks ahead of time for everyone's advice. Litton
Guest guest
, I had frequent cholangitis episodes during the last 2 years. Finally in August 2007 the docs put me on maintenance dose of Bactrim. I didn't have problems with it and was very thankful to not have so many infections. Because of my tx in Nov. 2007 I wasn't on the maintenance dose very long but it was very helpful. Interestingly, I am still on a lower maintenance dose of Bactrim following tx and will be til 6 months post op. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Quantell was started on maintenance antibiotics after becoming symptomatic, but even before his PSC dx was made -- so it's been 13 or 14 years now. He's been on cipro since 1996. And he's been on gent and colymicin sinc 2001. Other antibiotics are periodically added for (relatively) shorter periods. He's been on erythromycin for a couple years. Guest guest
, I have had persistent infection/URQ/ULQ pain and have been placed on 3 different revolving antibiotics for almost 2 years now by the medical director at the transplant center. Bactrim, Metro?zol, and another that I can't remember right now. My wife is in charge of my meds and totally on top of the situation. I revolve from one to the next to keep from building an immunity to any one medicine. I don't know how that works since I am always on them. One in the morning, one at night. Big horse pills, one that has a nasty metallic taste, but you don't notice it as much washing it down with gatorade. What's the difference when you take a handful at a time? Any side effects? Who can tell if it is a symptom of PSC or a side effect of the medicines. I can't tell you. But I haven't had a trip to the ER in a while and my blood tests are in the normal ranges. All of them play havoc with your body. Started on antidepressants which helped mentally and my bad mood/attitude, but they have side effects too. Temperature has been low if anything. ERCP number 5 coming in February. I am working in Florida which is a nice change to the -32 windchill/-12F actual in Minnesota. Going on a Disney Cruise in a few weeks. Diving in Grand Cayman. Praying that our difficult 15 month old is good on the cruise/flight. It will be a huge challenge. Thank god for my wife. Jilly has held it all together in the worst of times. Makes you appreciate life and your spouse/kids more and more every day. She gets me through the day even though I can be quite mean tempered and I realize it. Enjoying feeling better and getting my appetite back. Still tired, but " always look on the bright side of life " . De, do. Guest guest
, Thanks for the info I was wondering because I have taken Levaquin about 8 times in the last year for Choleangitis plus it is what they give me when they do an ercp. (The one right before we leave for Hawaii will be # 6 since last Jan.) The girls laugh because I climb up on the table and position myself in that really comfy position all by my self. I also have a really supportive spouse I think that makes this much more bearable. He is even telling people NO for me when they start to ask for something! I think it is because he is the one who has to deal with the ER and hospital stays. Our kids are 14 and 18 so traveling is much easier! Disney is fun with little ones and we have friends who did the Disney cruise twice they liked it so much. We live in Montana and had one of those cold spells with 0 and 40 mph winds last week. So Florida sounds really nice.
