Guest guest
Hi to all, My son diagnosed with autism is currently enrolled on the supportive Kindergarten classroom in a Weston elementary school The teacher is excellent but unfortunatelly the " Para " she has nas no idea or qualifications to help in the classroom. Is any regulation that I can see regarding this? Or about the qualifications needed? Any past experience will be greatly appreciated. Any suggestions of what tp do? Spoke in the IEP and with the Principal and they said they will train more the Para but I am totally sure he is not the right person. Guest guest
To follow the chain up the ladder I believe next would be your area ESE Director. The " para " qualifications are pretty weak and are heavy on background checking and light on qualifications. Perhaps calling an IEP to address a different para might bring to their attention how serious you consider this. Guest guest
If the teacher is excellent then why do you challenge his/her choice for para? Teachers usually have the final say as to the hiring/firing of their staff. I am not syaing you are wrong, I just wonder why you feel this para is not qualified. ** need help *** supportive K classroom Hi to all, My son diagnosed with autism is currently enrolled on the supportive Kindergarten classroom in a Weston elementary school The teacher is excellent but unfortunatelly the "Para" she has nas no idea or qualifications to help in the classroom. Guest guest
Teacher did not choose para... School just assigned para to her. Teacher worked the first 2 weeks with a sub teacher and teacher was amazed how good that lady was.... And how good they were working together. I asked the principal why can't they assign her that sub to the classroom again, and she said there's no budget for 2 teachers in the classroom... And she knows that sub teacher was more trained.... I am so pissed off... I went to my son class to volunteer and this men does not do anything.... My son is very distracted and there's just a litle the teacher can do qhile dealing with the other 16 kids.... Sent from my iPhone

Guest guest
Is this a general ed classroom? If so, perhaps your child would be better suited in an ESE classroom. I know all of us parents want our children to be in mainstream classrooms, but sometimes they are not suited to meet the needs of our special learners. I would start by going to the ESE director, and then move up from there. Request an IEP meeting and see if you can find an advocate to come to the meeting with you. If this classroom does not suit your childs needs then it is important to find a better placement sooner rather than later. Re: ** need help *** supportive K classroom Teacher did not choose para... Guest guest
Teachers don't hire/fire any staff. Did your teacher tell you that? The Para should be chosen according to the students' needs, or in the real world it will likely be whoever is available. Trouble with paras...how about requesting in an IEP meeting that the para assistance be recorded in say, daily sheets? You could also try getting a professional (behaviorist, speech therapist) to observe the classroom and record what the para does, and share the report with the IEP team. Like Steve noted, training is not a strong point for most paras and as far as I know pretty much anyone could be one (that is NOT to say that anyone could do their jobs right, just that a lot of people could fulfill the few requirements to get the position. I'm sure there's plenty of great paras out there). Good luck > > If the teacher is excellent then why do you challenge his/her choice for para? Guest guest
Is this a supported K? The principal is the one who usually assigns what para's work with what teachers. The teacher may have a preference that the pricipal might take into considerdation when assigning the para. What does is say in your sons IEP? Small classroom size,One on one ?? Does your child have behaviors? I think all these things need to be considered, you don't have to be in ESE to make the IEP work in gen ed. Thats why there are accomodations. Guest guest
I am in Monroe county, and ESE teachers interview and hire their staff (unless they would rather not). The para's in ESE classrooms down here are highly trained and educated. I have a BA in elementary education, and a child on the spectrum and I did not qualify for a para position at the local high school. ** need help *** supportive K classroom > > > > > Hi to all, My son diagnosed with autism is currently enrolled on the supportive Kindergarten classroom in a Weston elementary school > > The teacher is excellent but unfortunatelly the "Para" she has nas no idea or qualifications to help in the classroom. > > Is any regulation that I can see regarding this? Guest guest
Why couldn't the school support an ESE teacher instead of a para. The esese teaches are very qualified and they are usually in classes for atleast 1 hour per day. > > Hi to all, My son diagnosed with autism is currently enrolled on the supportive Kindergarten classroom in a Weston elementary school > > The teacher is excellent but unfortunatelly the " Para " she has nas no idea or qualifications to help in the classroom. > > Is any regulation that I can see regarding this?
