Guest guest
As a mother a Apraxic twins who are now almost six, try to find a PROMPT speech therapist. These kids really respond to this method of speech. aaron2kristie <aaron2kristie@...> wrote: Hi there! I am in the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga, above Ontario, California) and I am trying to locate a speech therapist that is wonderful with both an apraxic and autistic (mild) child. My son is aged 2.11 and is " pre " verbal. Anyone have any guidance? Also when I go in for an IEP can I request the school district pay this speech therapist? I am about 30 minutes from Pasadena and about 30 minutes from North Orange County and another 30 minutes from Redlands. Anyone have any leads or advice? Guest guest
hi! i can't really help with the speech therapist, but maybe i can share just a little experience about so. cal. schools. it is highly unlikely that the district would pay for your slp. most have slp's on staff and that is who would work with your son. the school is required to have an iep in place for your son by the time he turns 3, so i will assume your meeting is scheduled very soon. they should have completed all of their assessments by now. you have a right to get a copy of the reports before the meeting. i suggest you do this. if you're lucky you'll get a heads up about how much speech they are going to offer your son. typically, though, it will just say he qualifies and the iep team will determine how much. this is not meant as a disparagement toward the district slp's. in general they are wonderful. the reality is that the district has limited resources and they are restrained concerning how much speech they can recommend is needed. since you are looking for a therapist, i'm uncertain as to whether your son has been getting therapy or is just starting, so i can't tell if you have current recommendations about the amount of speech your son should be getting. if you do, you should take a written report with you. 2 times a week for 30 minutes each seems to be the going rate for almost all initial offers. if you don't think this is enough and you can't negotiate it up at the meeting, simple ask them to note in the iep that you are requesting an independent education evaluation, and though your don't agree the amount of speech is adequate, you agree that the district can at least start these services until the other assessment is done and the matter is resolved. the district has to give you information then about getting the assessment from someone who is not employed by the school " at public expemse " which just means the school will pay for it. your son should qualify for extended school year (summer school). who knows, with a lighter load during the summer, just maybe they will offer you all the speech your son needs!!! good luck! --- Faeth <dizio111@...> wrote: > As a mother a Apraxic twins who are now almost six, > try to find a PROMPT speech therapist.
