Do any of you think you had fibromyalgia as a young child?

Hi,

I'm thinking now that my daughter has had fibromyalgia since she was an

infant, but we didn't understand her pain.

Do any of you remember having movement problems when you were a child, like

problems keeping up with other children when they were running, or stiffness?

What about problems waking when you were little? (My daughter as an infant

would cry inconsolably for two hours after waking from a shorter nap.)

I talked today with a mom I haven't spoken to for ten years that I knew

when our children were one and two years old. This other child is in

special education and has a supposedly very low IQ (which I cannot believe

is accurate from knowing her when she was little), but her mother says that

she has great difficulty getting out of bed in the morning and it sounds so

much like my own daughter's difficulty with pain in the morning.. I just

wonder how often fibromyalgia is not recognized when there are other issues

going on.

Any thoughts?

Wow interesting post. My daughter is 10, and been under a tremendous amount of

stress with the divorce, and being forced to live with her father. she is

overweight, and has very bad restless leg syndrome. She has lots of aches and

pains. I thought maybe she had a thyroid disorder as I do, but never thought of

her having Fibro. That is definetely somthing I will keep in mind with her.

Just popped in here. I thought I might answer this (I am behind here as

usual)...

Anyway, I don't remember symptoms in childhood except I do recall that all

through my childhood and teen years into young adult hood I required massive

amounts of sleep in order to feel refreshed. I am talking at least 10 or 12

hours a night to feel like I could function right. ALWAYS. I went to the

doctor in my 20's and complained of being " tired ALL the time " ... of course he

ran blood work, saw that my thyroid was fine, I was not anemic... then said

" just exercise more " . As years went by I became more and more tired all the

time until now it has progressed to pure exhaustion every minute of my life.

I do not recall having pain though when I was a child. I had one symptom though

that was strange. I remember that when I would turn my head or neck a certain

way I felt an electrical shock sensation at the base of the skull in the back of

my head. Wierd.

My 20's moved in with the increased exhaustion and the numbness and tingling

started in my fingers on and off.

love and hugs,

I know that I have had fibromyalgia as far back as I can remember,

however, it would ebb and flow. There would be long stretches of time

when I was in no pain at all. But I can remember during school when I

would have a big project coming due and I would put in so much time

working on it that my back and shoulders would just kill me. I can

remember hurting so badly that I would lay down in the floor and my

mother would massage my back with her feet..running up and down the

muscles while she sat in her rocking chair! Sounds crazy but it felt

wonderful. I can also remember for as long as I can remember always

LOVING to take a hot, hot bath because I always felt so much better

afterwards.

I remember being very sore from most activities when I was a child. In gym it

was almost impossible for me to compete with the rest of the class due to pain.

I always seemed to manage to sprain my wrists and ankles and was always told

that I was just a big klutz. I had frequent headaches, wasn't able to

concentrate very well and had a lot of difficulty retaining things that I had

just learned. I felt stupid compared to some of the other girls in my classes.

I started my period at the age of 9 and had very heavy flows and extremely

painful periods until I finally had to have a hysterectomy at the age of 29.

So yes, I do believe it is possible for us to begin having Fibromyalgia at a

very early age. I'm quite sure I had it, but was never diagnosed until just a

few years ago. It's awful going through your young life being called a big boo

boo and not knowing why you are different from everyone else.

I believe I've had symptoms since childhood. You might be right about the

infancy thing. I know I overate even as a baby, and then I would spit up or

throw up. I felt tired as a child, couldn't keep up with the other kids, but

this was because I was overweight(or so I was told). I had frequent stomach

aches and emotional problems in childhood. I remember waking frequently as a

child, being afraid, waking up my mom, and her getting mad and telling me to get

back into bed. I truly believed I was some sort of freak of nature, but that

was my secret. So all of these emotional and physical problems slowly built up

with high periods and low periods until it all came to a head in 1998. Don't

know if that helps you at all.

Me too, I know now that the intenesity of " growing

pains " and body aches prior to menstral cycles were

not normal. I remember my grandmother rubbing my legs

and feet with rubbing alchol til i fell asleep as i

would hurt so bad i would cry.

Celeste - My 14 yr. old daughter was diagnosed at age 10. I had her diagnosed

at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee. If you search some of the old posts, you

can read her whole story.

Humph. Sounds like the story of my life.

Can't respond at length; gotta do other stuff. All-over pain as

child continuing through adulthood, overweight since age 9, bizarre

eating behavior as a toddler. It just got a name within the past

decade.

I am not so certain that my chronic insomina as a child was connected

with having just gotten up from my afternoon nap when I saw my

brother killed. Don't know if that would explain some of the

numerous incidents of my mother having to call the doctor in the

middle of the night and, if my father was not home because of his

job, she would call my aunt and my uncle would go to the drugstore to

get what ever the doctor who call in --- this was back in the 1940's

in a town with a population of 2,100; so I don't think that was an

unusual pattern. And generally, what I would get was " coke " syrup!!

Which must explain why I still love Coke!

I think I had Lupus as a child; but I don't think I had fibro. I've definitely

acquired these new symptoms much more recently.

I've always felt stiff. I don't think I've had fibromyalgia as a child, though.

I think I might have started having it when I developed carpel tunnel, which is

3 years earlier than when I was first diagnosed.

Do any of you think you had fibromyalgia as a young child?

What sort of odd eating behavior were you talking about? The young lady I

was talking about yesterday still has very restricted eating...sounds like

basically all she eats is gluten and dairy.

The more I learn about fibro the more I am certain that I had it when I was

young. I can remember my parents taking me to the doctor and being told it was

just " growing pains " .

Yes, I do. I think I had symptoms as young as 8 or 9. I think I had

my first full blown flare-up at seventeen. My parents were always on

me about " faking " it.

I know that I have had mine since I was little but I'm not sure what

might have triggered it. My mom used to take me to the docs all the

time for pain. My pain back then didn't last more than a few days at

a time. The docs couldn't figure out what was wrong with me of

course. I remember them telling my mom that i may have some form of

arthritis. When I was finally diagnosed my mom felt horrible and

blamed herself but I told her that it wasn't her fault that the docs

couldn't figure it out. Now my oldest daughter has the same symptoms

as I did when I was young (she is 11). It makes me feel terrible

that she is going to have to go through this too. Gentle Hugs, Vicki

Well,

I had strained ankles starting when I was in jr high. i also had many episodes

of pains. I was on crutches for knee pain at 10 and " virus in my hip " at 11. I

had extreme pain with my menses and was on a wide range of pain meds from 13 on

so i could attend school. I missed one day a month because it was to painful. I

spent at least a couple of periods at school sleeping in the nurses office and

then return to class. i had natural child birth with both my children and labor

was less painful than my menes.

I think my daughter has fibro but her dr said " it's not hereditary " . HaHa.

She has many symptoms but she doesn't want it so she says she doesn't have it. I

hope she is right. She has Osgoods=Slaters that effects the muscles, asmatha,

severe pms, migrains, allergies to meds and foods and clorine. She has been

having excessive pain and some ibs symptoms.

My grandmother was telling me of somethings that happened to her during her last

few weeks. I think she may have had it and possibly her sister. I think that

walking helps. It seems that as we walk less then the worse it is.
