Try YMCA Broward; they have several special need locations at different schools throughout the county. I personally have not used the program, but I do know it exists. You may also want to try calling 211. Subject: AftercareTo: sList Date: Tuesday, October 19, 2010, 5:22 PM

Where in the world do I do with my child in the afternoon if I have to work??? He goes to norcrest elem. But they cannot accomodate him so he is bused to bright horizons in the united cerebral palsy program. Kids from 5-22 in the same class , all exceptionalites and quite upsetting and chaotic for my child. Does anyone know of any alternatives? What do working parents in broward do with their autistic children? I get a call every other day or so to get my child early because he is crying at aftercare. I would love some direction on this...thanks!!!Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: badillo9@...

Jodi: was this the first time your son took VSL? That is an unusual reaction. He's not by chance on resperdal - that causes nose bleeds.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced their child having nosebleeds on VSL #3. My son takes it and just started having nosebleeds about 45 minutes after being on it.

I would be very upset if my son was crying in aftercare too... I don't understand why his school won't accommodate him. I'd think he'd be able to stay at the school he attends for aftercare. My son attends a karate afterschool program and I pay extra for him to have a buddy to help him when he needs it. Sent from my iPhone

I think another issue is that for parents that have unlimited income, they can pay for anything under the sun and if I were not a single parent with limited resources I would too...Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileSender: sList Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2010 18:02:14 -0700 (PDT)To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: Re: Aftercare also if you can get your son into the The Quest Center in Hollywood, fl they have an excellent after care program and your son will stay at that school until 12th grade. I'm a single mom. My son's dad and I are having issues with a good aftercare because of our different work hours, I don't have a car and the distance from our son's school and where we workSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®Sender: sList Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2010 08:29:40 -0700 (PDT)To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: Re: Aftercare Hi there! Some of the aftercare programs at the schools are run by other contractual companies and not the school system and so are not set up for special needs. Its unfortunate that the YMCA used to have so many of the aftercare programs in so many schools and no longer do. However, if they have an afterschool program at your school, it may be helpful for you to contact the director of the program and assist with inclusion of your child.

I'm confused...

Did the school district say (or your child's school rather) that they could NOT take your child?

I don't believe they can say that.

When my son started at his school, we were just told to give them a few days notice that we were going to place him in their afterschool program so they could accommodate him.

I am saddened that the home schools that have the clusters do not accommodate our kids. Its horrible and traumatic to bus our kids to other sites...there are more and more kids being diagnosed w autism and more and more clusters popping up. What does the school system expect for parents to do??? Most of us spend every last cent on services and do not have the luxury of a private babysitter. This seems like a huge problem. I was appalled that at the UCP they had all exceptionalites and all ages up to 22 ys old in the SAME class...no wonder my 9 year old is stressed out and crying. I would be too!!!!! I think they receive funds for having our children go to them and they should care. I am thinking w this thread of aftercare they are starting to listen to us. It is probably a good idea to talk w our advocates and explain. We also have this Meyerson wanting to support us. I think it is time for these type of schools to open their eyes and touch their hearts and see what they might lose if they don't help.Sent from my BlackBerry® on the MetroPCS NetworkFrom: deborahdunn@...Sender: sList Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2010 14:20:33 +0000To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: Re: Aftercare My sons school said they cannot accommodate him and that I could have him bused to another school where they had the United Cerebral Palsy program. There are some private afterschool programs that will take our kids. It may be that they need a buddy/shadow/mentor to help and that can cost extra.

But I'd start calling around. And be very honest about your son's challenges and strengths.
