Risperal by Wockhardt Limited? or Patriot?

My son takes risperdone since he was 3 yrs old for his

Behavior issues. He’s 8 yrs old 52 lbs and never saw any difference and

he’s very skinny and the medicine doesn’t help to focus and

he’s very active and sometimes he won’t stop running but he's a

happy kid. Dr just increased the dose about 8 months ago and he’s taking

2mg per day, 1 in the morning and 1 at night but still don’t see any

progress and I’m going to see the Neuro on Nov 9th Can anyone suggest

any other medication to help focus and to slow down? or can he take Rispordone

and adderall at the same time? I need a medication that won’t affect the

appetite, he’s a good eater. Also he has a lot of anxiety in the morning

because he knows the Bus is coming and he doesn’t want to go to

school…well who want to go to school?? Most kids hate school…please

I need some advice.

I can understand that the risperidone is being prescribed for behavior issues, but I'm not sure that it's meant to help with focus issues. If you haven't seen any progress in 8 months with the behavior issues, you might want to consider continuing with that particular medication - a discussion for you to have with your physician, along with the focus issue.

The Dr prescribed this medication since he was in pre-school

(4 yrs old) when the behavior issues started, but he still have behavior issues

today, so I can’t continue this Medication if there’s no progress

in his behavior. A friend of mine has her son with Risperdone and

adderall at the same time and it did help a lot, so maybe I should try those

two together, but I will ask the Dr first. Also the Dr said Risporde

suppose to help my son to slow down since he’s very hyper, so it did help,

but very little and I know if I take him out of Risperdone he’ll be very

active and won’t stop. I wanted to know which medication will help the

focus and anxiety so I can talk to the Dr next month. Please I need some

suggestion.

Is your son verbal? Is he able to talk to you about why he dislikes school? I have to disagree with you about the fact that Most kids hating school, I think it's in fact the opposite. If he's having a great deal of anxiety each morning I would explore more of why that could be. Is he being bullied? Is there something specific he is afraid of?

 

It is not often at all that my daughter says she doesn't want to go to school, even when she's sick, even my typical daughter has never tried to get out of going.

 

A child can take Adderall and Risperdal together, but Addreal (or any stimulat ADD medication) is going to effect his appitite, it is the single most common side effect of the medication. For some children it fades off a bit and they do eat lunch and dinner, but from all the parents I've spoken to (two of my girls have ADHD) even the ones who felt they're children's appitite wasn't effected for long, found that it was when they would take a break for the weekend or for school holidays etc. It seems as if they don't stop eating all day compared to how they ate when taking the medication.

There is a non-stimulat medication for ADHD/ADD, Strattera, however it takes longer to see any results because the medication has to build up in their system and then you have to give it every day too, unlike the stimulants that only need to be taken when there is a need to have them slow down and focus (many parents choose not to give on the weekends or other school breaks)

 

Something else to consider if his anxiety is really bad, is that a stimulant medication can actually cause increased anxiety. While common it's not as common as the appitite effect, but for someone who already struggles with anxiety it may not be a great choice. Those who I've spoken with who saw increased anxiety found that they could get rid of that by reducing the dose, however it often brought it to a point where it wasn't effective for the attention and focus, so kinda defeating the purpose in taking it.

 

I'm not saying you shouldn't try to find a medication that works for your child, my child is one that must have it, we've tried behavior modification alone and we've tried eliminating common suspects such as food dyes, sugar etc. and her ADHD is severe, she is already delayed due to seizures that has set her back and the ADHD makes it impossible for her to sit and learn even for a few seconds at a time. Without her medication she is like the energizer bunny on speed! No way the teachers can get her to get any work done or absorb any information when she's constantly going like that. But with the medication she is still a bit hyper and impulsive, but she at least has the capability to sit and do some work with some redirection and reminders to stay on task etc.

 

Just wanted to let you know that it could be a long road and many trips to the dr. before finding the best fit for your child. Of course you may luck out and hit it quickly like we did for my older daughter too, but it seems that the more issues that need to be worked through the harder it can be.

PS. You may find that his anxiety about going to school fades if you find a good ADHD medication too. Sometimes that anxiety is due to the fact that they know they are going to be expected to do something that is just not possible for them and based on what results that's gotten him in the past he may not like that... Such as if the teacher is constantly yelling at him to do his work, or if the other kids don't like him because he's not able to sit still.

I'm In a group like this for parents of kids with ADHD, and I've lost count on the number of parents who have joined and were afraid of starting their child on medication only to have the child come home after the first day or so and tell them " Mom/Dad! I'm not dumb! " or " Mom, I had a great time at school today "   They really have no understanding about why they can't sit still or pay attention and don't realize they aren't until they are actually able to.
