I usually starts Cipro 2 or 3 days prior to the ERCP.

Then it will be included in the IV at the start of the

procedurevas Arne has mentioned. And for 7 or 10 more

days, orally post it.

But i would like to mention that i think inspite of

Cipro, i did get Pancreatitus once or twice, at least.

But it does make feel more comfortable with taking it

than without.

About the nuasea, Cipro does give me some nuasea that

is not only associated with an ERCP but also when i

take it at home for a cholangitis infection. And with

the latest, the nuasea might be due to both Cipro and

the cholangitis.

Antibiotics will not prevent pancreatitis - its an inflammatory response vs. bacterial. This article (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/521049) suggests numerous factors, some of them dependent on the patient, some on the endoscopist.

Excerpted from the above abstract (SOD = sphincter of Oddi dysfunction):

Risk Factors for Post-ERCP Pancreatitis: A Prospective Multicenter Study

Conclusion: This study emphasizes the role of patient factors (age, SOD, prior history of post-ERCP pancreatitis) and technical factors (number of PD injections, minor papilla sphincterotomy, and operator experience) as the determining high-risk predictors for post-ERCP pancreatitis

Thanks, Arne. I haven't read the article, yet. I want

to find out what does the " dysfunction " of sphinicter

of oddi, means.

By the way, what does " PD " , means?
