Guest guest
, That's great news! Tell Fred congrats on the obedient colon - go Fred, go Fred... Probiotics has made a difference for me, too - I started them several years ago after a real problem with candida. I like when there is a simple solution. Guest guest
So " Sigmoid " Fred had his sigmoidoscopy and endoscopy llast Friday just to see how things were doing since all his UC flare ups. The doctor said " if I didn't know he had UC, I would NEVER have guessed he had UC! " Things looked peachy keen. Perfect. We attribute that in part or whole to the VSL#3 probiotics he's been taking since Dec. 17. So let that be a testimony to the power of VSL#3 - thank God for great finds like that. All bodily functions normal - a great start to his 60th year Fred said. Dr. also found mild inflammation in esophagus and moderate at point where esophagus meets stomach (That IS the stomach that connects there, correct?). They took blood to test for heliobacteria, which if test is positive, he'll take antibiotics and up his VSL#3. If it's not that, dr. said he has acid reflux. Regardless, he's having no symptoms. So UC, we consider the UC clean bill of health to be somewhat of a miracle, thanks to VSL#3. Pray-eeze Jay-sus! May it last... Guest guest
That's great! I'd like to add my endorsement for the VSL#3 too. It really has worked wonders for me. I saw my GI doctor the other day and he hadn't heard of it (although he does recommend other brands of probiotics to his patients), but when I told him how much it had helped me he was rather impressed. Has anyone had any success with getting VSL#3 prescribed and getting insurance to help pay for it? I did see on their website that they have a prescription strength version available, and I remember someone commenting here about it the other day. My GI doctor wouldn't prescribe it because he hadn't heard of it before and wanted to learn more about it before writing prescriptions. Anyway, glad things are going better for you! athan
Guest guest
Hey, Fred! I'm so glad to hear that your colon is cooperating! Prior to transplant I was avoiding dairy and gluten, also, and did find that it helped. After tx I was told I can eat whatever I want. The thought of that brought nothing short of elation! So, I got gutsy and had some milk...nothing; no bloating, no potty trots - nothing. I've since added cheese and regular bread. I've been doing fine. I am now starting to see some UC symptoms, but they don't seem to be in direct relationship to dairy or gluten, like before, when I could drink milk and in 15 min. I had issues. I'm waiting to talk to my coordinator to see what she has to say about all of this. I'm hoping I can just add probiotics back into my medicine cocktail without having to add Azulfadine. I am currently taking 15 mg. of Prednisone per day, so that may be helping to keep things from going ... well, going. I hope things continue to go well for you! Guest guest
Hi everyone, Fred here----I didn't realize posted the above regarding my recent sigmoid until just now, having seen the latest PSC email. Anywho, I'll provide my input on all this---- I've been using the probiotic VSL#3 for about 1.5 months, and also avoid dairy, and also have been avoiding gluten. I started the VSL#3 at 4 packets a day and now do a maintenance dose, one packet a day. Like athan indicated elsewhere, you can get VSL#3 online (Google it or go to http://www.vsl3.com/VSL3/about.asp to learn about it/buy it), but I find that many pharmacies also carry it or can get it----it's over-the-counter and they keep it refrigerated. It's a bit expensive----$70 to $95 for a box of 30 packets. It pays to shop around. Also, with a prescription the pharmacy I buy it form doesn't charge sales tax, so that's a bit of a savings. But as best I can tell, medical insurance won't pay for any of it since it is over-the-counter, at least mine won't. The VSL#3 does seem to have been a factor in my peachy-keen colon, but I'm still taking Prednisone too----I'm tapering off of it (decreasing dosage by 2.5 mg each week) and am currently at 7.5 mg/day. Also, my avoidance of dairy probably has helped. So at this point, it does seem that the VSL#3 has worked, but I'll be more confident after I'm completely off the Prednisone. Regarding my avoidance of gluten, I don't know if that has been a factor. The doc also did a biopsy testing for celiac disease, although my less than 100% avoidance of gluten for several weeks prior to the biopsy may screw up the results of that test if I do indeed have a problem with gluten. Oh well. Fred > > So " Sigmoid " Fred had his sigmoidoscopy and endoscopy llast Friday just > to see how things were doing since all his UC flare ups.
