Guest guest
Hi All My son has been on Intuniv for about a month now. The doctor had me wean him off of the Risperdol while putting him on the Intuniv. I was happy with this as the Risperdol was giving him a big belly and man boobs. The first 2 weeks he kept falling asleep in the afternoon for a little bit and wanting to go to bed for the night at 6pm. So I called the doctor and he told me to give it to him at night (we were giving it in the AM) He has been on it at night now for 12 days. At first it was fine he fell asleep at a normal time and still took a nap on the way home from school. But now he has become very very stimmy especially his vocals to where even behavior modification does not help and goes back and foth being up past midnight..........Thursday he was up till 2am. Sat night he went to bed at 9pm and did not get up till almost 8am and then last night did not go to sleep till after 12:30. We are really liking the effects we had seen but i am not liking how he is staying up to late. Has anyone else had some of the same experences? I was even thinking about changing him back to an AM dose to see what happens as he is now completely off the Risperdol and I wonder if the Risperdol and the Intuniv is why he was so sleep during the day. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, My son is on Intuniv and Zoloft (Setraline). I give both at night. Intuniv about 2 hours before bedtime because he was putting his head down at school still tired. Giving the med a little earlier in the evening helped and have not had any other issues. I also like the Intuniv as it has less side effects then other meds we've tried in the past. Maybe its a dosage issue. My son is on 3mg. of Intuniv but he's also 14, is 5'11 " and weighs about 200lbs. Lissette Hi All My son has been on Intuniv for about a month now. Guest guest
Once I started using Melatonin to relax my child to go to sleep (he was @4) we don't know how we survived without it.....it is very safe to help them fall asleep...I give my 6 yr. old 1 mg. dropper/liquid and put it in his juice (or milk)..it is approved by Neurologists, Pediatricians, everyone!!! The only thing is that not all brands work the same. The only one that works for us is the Vitamin World black cherry melatonin drops....others did not help us much. Everyone now gets a good nights sleep at our house!!! From: evnrpr@...To: sList Sent: Monday, December 12, 2011 12:21:13 PMSubject: Re: Intuniv Try melatonine , aks doctor! Guest guest
My son is also on Intuniv 3mg. At first I was giving it to him in the morning and he was also very tired. I switched him to the evening. At first he was falling asleep fine but after a week I had to start giving him meletonin. He is taking the Intuniv to help with the adhd. For this he also takes Vyvanse 50mg. He is also on Fanapt and we just started Trileptal. I don't see much of a differnence with the Intuniv. Meletonin does help with sleep. He is taking 6mg right now every night. Guest guest
Hi Dawn: My son was on intuniv. I think first of all that it is possible that while he was still on the risperdal it was affecting how sleepy he was. That being said, Intuniv is a timed release med. It is the long acting form of tenex, a simple blood pressure med. Anyhow, any of these meds cause sleepiness. Some docs Rx intuniv for day time use to address impulsivity etc as it basically will mellow a child out. I saw this effect and did like it however it made my son too sleepy which in turn made him very grumpy. I decided that the pros did not outweigh the cons. Also as a timed release med it may have different effects on diff kids due to the chemical in it that makes it timed release as opposed to the regular tenex or clonidine. Intuniv seems to be one of those tricky meds, for some its ok for others it causes too many problems. You may want to mess around with the dosing time again but if you continue to have problems you may want to move on. What symptoms are you trying to target with the intuniv? Guest guest
Again, it was a series of different doctors who recommended Melatonin, it is very safe, non-addictive, no side effects if only the minimum is taken to achieve relaxation to be able to fall asleep, much safer than any prescription drug (this is not a prescription med)...but good luck! Guest guest
Intuniv is a statin!!! It can have severe side effects. In most cases, drugs are not given to children under age six. The drug companies state the age when the drug is supposed to be used, and this is why doctors do not prescribe it for young kids. Intuniv is relatively new, and there is therefore no long-term research on it. It is for ADHD, and the patient should have tried (and failed) at least 3 other drugs! Melatonin, on the other hand, is not a drug. It is a supplement. H.T. Guest guest
Autism Speaks has some information on their website regarding the safety of melatonin for children with autism and related disorders for sleep problems. I have given it to my daughter for several years (she has adhd) with doctor's authorization and it works well. I would definitely recommend trying it. I give it to her about 30-45 minutes before bedtime, so she can actually lay down in the bed instead of flopping around like a fish just pulled out of water. http://www.autismspeaks.org/science/science-news/more-evidence-melatonin-eases-autism-associated-insomnia As far as Intuniv, I tried it for her for a period of about 8 months because Ritalin made her eye twitch and Vyvanse, although it worked fabulous it cut her appetite down to zero and she became almost anorexic. Intuniv was the non-stimulant medication the doctor suggested to try. Because it has to build up in the system and takes about 6 weeks to take its full effect, the first 6 weeks were miserable and most of the time it seemed like she was not on any medication at all. Just 2 weeks ago we put her back on Vyvanse (she gained 20 pounds back in 8 months) and the difference in not only her behavior, but her mood and emotional well being is amazing. She is eating well this time, though. Perhaps the timing for the medicine 8 months ago was not right. Now, she is ready for it. And coincidentally, my son takes the Vyvanse also, just a larger dose. I don't enjoy giving my kids medication, but in order for them to function at their best and to enjoy every day, they need it. And my kids are high functioning enough to know that they need it. So they will ask me for it, if I forget to give it to them. Because it can be a very bad day without it. Guest guest
Hello, Our daughter has been on Intuniv for almost 2 years (She is almost 10 years old now). Believe us, We tried " ALL " kind of natural ways before going to Intuniv and nothing gave good results (Very hyper – poor attention). With Intuniv, my daughter's attention has improved 100%. She is other person. She is doing WONDERFUL in the school thanks to this drug. Side effects? The first month she was falling asleep in the afternoon so, the doctor recommended having the medication at 5:30pm and it's working very well. > > > > Subject: Re: Intuniv > To: " sList " <sList > > Date: Thursday, December 15, 2011, 5:34 PM > > > >  > > > > > > Intuniv is a statin!!! Guest guest
Thanks for the info. I started giving my son the intuniv about 6pm and it seems to be working better and he does not seem to be falling asleep like he was before. I really like the better focus that I am seeing also. What MG pill is everyone on? My son is 11 about 80 pounds and on 3mg. He has only been on it for about 6 weeks but ony at the 3mg full dose for about 4 weeks. Guest guest
Dawn, I believe the manufacturer has you build up to a 3mg dose--starting at 1mg then going up to 2mg, and then 3mg. We got to 3mg and my daughter (after a month) was fsaling asleep in school, in the car, after school--practically everywhere all day long. It was ridiculous. The sleepiness is supposed to wear off after a few weeks. If it continues after 30 days then the dose is too high for your child. The doctor said he would reduce the dose back down to 2mg, which helped with the sleepiness, but the effectiveness was also reduced. I hope you find a better result. Good luck. Guest guest
Thanks Joyce. I am taking Notes so I will keep watching him and see how he is. We see the doctor again after the holidays so hopefully it will all be leveled out by then.
