Guest guest
As a part of my work-up when they were trying to diagnose PSC, they did a colonoscopy because I have infrequent episodes of severe diarrhea, for which no cause has been found. They told me the colonoscopy showed no signs of IBD. For years I have been told that this is " just " IBS, but, now that I know I have PSC, I'm really suspicious that I actually have IBD. I suppose that it's possible that I can be in the minority who do not have IBD, and still have IBS. Is there anyone else out there who is in this situation? Also, can IBD develop very slowly - in other words, can I have IBD that is just undetectable at this point, and it will get worse? Thanks, Debbie
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, There was an article just recently on this board about PSC and IBD, and yes, it is possible to have PSC first and be diagnosed with IBD later. For example my (next week) 11-year old son has been diagnosed with PSC in July 2003 but still does not have an IBD diagnosis although he, too, has had some symptoms for quite a while already. He is due to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy within the next few months, though, after which we will know, for now, if it is IBD or not. Here is the link to the recent article in case you missed it http://www.wjgnet.com/1007-9327/abstract_en.asp?f=331 & v=14 Taru-Mari son Eemeli, 11-yo next week, PSC 07/2003 > I suppose that it's possible that I can be in the minority who do not > have IBD, and still have IBS. I sometimes wonder if I had very mild UC all along and they just caught me between flares when they checked after the PSC diagnosis. athan
Guest guest
> > Is there anyone else out there who is > > in this situation? Hi Debbie, I was diagnosed with PSC, I have had 2 colonsocopies with no sign of IBD. My older sister and younger brother both have UC. As I get older (now 56) I find food that has given me no trouble previously, now causes quite dramatic diahrea, they include anything with a whole grain inc. oats, bran, grape/orange seeds (white bread is fine), seafood. apples with its skin on etc. It seems to be my digestive system is becoming unable cope with 'rough and tough food' (Is it happening because it is getting less and less bile due to PSC to aid digestion - I don't know)? Perhaps you could keep a 'food diary' and see it your upsets are caused by a particular food. Best wishes
