Guest guest
There is an income restriction and that includes the income of the household! It's not like SSI that is based just on your son's income. So this is a huge consideration on whether he gets food stamps or not. They will ask for your tax returns and your husband's. Hello Listmates,I'm going to help my 22-year old son apply for food stamps. He currently gets SSI, and with a job layoff and whatnot, every bit can only help. I have applied on-line to start the process. Does anyone have any suggestions, tips or hints about where the roadblocks or potholes are in this process? Thank you for any assistance.Jan MiamiMom of 3 autistic cuties (even the 22 year old)

Guest guest
, Josh has food stamps and SSI. If it had anything to do with family income Josh surly wouldn't have gotten it. When filling out the app. online you have to read the questions carefully . The young adults that are 18 and older are independent. . They live in our homes and pay us rent. They didn't ask us for tax returns. It's ALL about your child. Again READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY.. Happy New year to ALL!!! Re: Applying for food stamps for my 22 year old - any tips/hint... Guest guest
Yes. The same goes for applying for disability when they turn 18, again they are adults even though you may have had to go through guardianship. Keep careful records about the rent they pay you and the other costs ie: haircuts, gift purchases, food (especially the lunches when they are out of the house at the volunteer or work sites). I would suggest that a separate account with a debit card which you can place a daily limit on is helpful so they don't carry cash. We're working on remembering the debit code silently and not saying it out loud. Good luck. Guest guest
Marla they might have changed now, but two years ago when I spoke to the representative they sent us paperwork for taxes. It didn't seem right to us and we asked and that's what we were told. But that's good you could do this. , Josh has food stamps and SSI. Guest guest
They have their own money if it comes from SSI or whatever, however it will have to be paid into the guardianship or bank account which the bills are drawn from. If social security is paying as a disabled adult then the guardian must also be on the account from ssa and the bank. It is not the guardian's money, the guardian is only paying out from the accounts so if whatever the disabled adult qualifies for they get. Much like if you would have an elderly parent in an assisted living facility or something, they are very often not able to handle their own accounts. You may want to get an accountant if you feel you are not able to separate the funds, bills, etc. I use an excel form that I place all monthly bills, payments, credits etc on and it keeps it tallied, plus the monthly statements from the bank. I also use the tax software every year which is charged to the account. Then I have an accountant check it over and sign it before it is sent to the IRS. Guest guest
Excuse me for using the wrong terminology. Yes it is ROOM & BOARD We were very honest on the application. We didn't give any tax returns. Our SS case worker gave us the phone # and address for the department of children and families office. He said" food stamps wouldn't effect Josh's SSI." We went and they told us we can do it on line. Which we did. Josh also receives free lunch. I was told if he receives food stamps, he can get free lunch. SSI increased this month and the food stamps decreased $10.00. Cheryl is right about keeping records. When taking the guardianship class they clearly told us keep good records and receipts. Have a great day!! Happy & healthy New Year!!
