Guest guest
I would like to get respite for my 10 yr old son who is autistic, but I also need someone to watch my 5 yr daughter at the same time. Has anyone used respite for similar situation and how did it work out? Also, does respite do that, where they watch the special needs child along with a typical sibling? Guest guest
in Florida, respite would require you to bring your child to a facilityyou need to ask for "home health care"i am in the middle of trying to get this for my 6 year old son with has autism , non verbal and Phelan McDermid SyndromeI want some one to come to my home and watch him so I can cook, clean, and have one minute to breathe!check with your care coordinator or insurance to see what it is called in your area. Guest guest
Unfortunately our funders don’t allow siblings to be cared for through the respite programs they fund (this is true for all of the special needs providers who are funded by Broward County and APD). We are permitted to provide respite in your home while another person provides care to the child’s sibling. Guest guest
Yes it works. We had a respite worker watch both my son w autism and his older sister. You may have to go through a few to find the right match and a pre-interview, if possible, is helpful. We had two of the most fabulous women watch our kids when they were young and we still stay in touch. (My kids are now 20 and 17). Guest guest
Unfortunately, funding sources are not allowing Respite programs to care for typical siblings too as they used to some years back. If your child is not receiving medwaiver services, UCP can provide in home services for your child with autism or other developmental disability. (We don't use center care.) It sounds like in your situation when you need someone to watch both kids, you may want to get a specialized baby sitter. You may want to check out http://www.care.com/how-it-works-p1008.html I have not used them but have looked through baby sitter profiles and some not only look like they have experience but are actually affordable to use now and then. Good luck.
