Subject: Interesting

article on treatment for liver cirrhosis

Since PSC essentially causes cirrhosis of the liver I

thought it was

extremely interesting to see that there may be something available to

reverse liver scaring. I am not sure long-term if this would buy

people more time before requiring a transplant, but thought it was

worth posting.

Hi Jarad;

Yes, it was posted by Barb on Sep 25, 2006 (see message #88254 in the

archives), and it generated a fair amount of discussion on Sep 25 and

Sep 26, 2006.

Best regards,

Dave R.

I'm afraid this is a rather old article and turned out to not be as

exciting as expected. I asked my specialist at the Hepatology unit in

Kings College Hospital, London, and he said that given that people with

PSC-associated conditions have been treated with Sulfasalazine for quite

a while, then it was hardly likely that its effects would have gone

unnoticed. Apparently liver units all over the UK (and abroad I suspect)

were bombarded by patients demanding Sulfasalazine after this article

came out, which just shows how careful the media needs to be in

reporting very early research.
