We are getting an IPad for our 4 year old autistic son for Christmas but we are unsure which apps to buy. Does anyone know which apps are the best for language development? Thanks!

I, too, want to know the best apps.  There was a post just a little while ago about a guide to the best apps for autism but I can't remember exactly when, sometime around the beginning of October I believe?

If you’re looking for a communication program, Proloquo2go is a good one.

Once you purchase the Ipad your first impulse may be to put

games on it first. Instead you might put the educational programs on first. I

say this because if his first choice is between the game or the new educational

program, the choice might be too easy for him. Perhaps some Ipad people might

want to comment.

I agree with . If you are going to purchase the device

with the intent to educate and enable communication that make that the primary

use, at least initially. The purpose will be lost otherwise.

My son LOVES the Model Me kids GOING PLACES app. Made his getting the MB12 shot

super easy because he " modeled " the child in the app!!!

He also likes IZOO, Talking Tom, Art of Glow, Baby Piano, Reflection Pool and

Letter Quiz! Hope that helps!

I know there are more serious ones out there with Pecs type cards which seem

great but we have not tried those.

The neat thing about the IPad is that you can move apps, hide them and rearrange them to get the right balance of education and games. Proloquo2go is excellent especially when you resize icons and adjust for coordination issues. Also, most important is to buy the right case. Otter makes some great "bullet-proof " cases. We are using the basic Ipad with wireless only. The Proloquo2go software can also be loaded on an Iphone or Ipod touch at no extra cost.

Hi there,

We have the itouch and we love the apps from Kindergarten.com.

There are basic ABA flashcard apps (most free) including:Actions Alphabet Earth Science Emotions Fruit & Nuts Musical Instruments Sports Things You Eat Things You Play With Things You Wear Vegetables Vehicles Zoo Animals

And then there are more advanced problem solving apps (totally worth the 99c) including:Community Helpers Healthy Habits What Doesn't Belong? What Goes Together? What Rhymes?

Also, see p 9 of the attached Autism Insider Newsletter for another list of apps.
