Hello Everyone,

I had my first liver transplant for PSC in 2000, the disease recurred, and I had

a second

transplant in July 2007. Now the disease is starting to recur in my third

(second

transplanted) liver. Has anyone else had this experience? Does anyone know of

any leading

edge research on turning off the immune process that keeps causing the disease

to recur in

liver after liver? Any comments would be helpful.

Dear Dave,

That is an excellent way to describe what happens with the immune response. I love it.

Thanks for your continuing hard work for PSC.

Hello " wrdeco " ;

I'm so sorry to hear about your PSC recurrence yet again. I wish I knew

the answer to how to " turn-off the immune process that keeps causing

the disease to recur. " The leading edge research being done on this is

by a group in the U.K., Dr Adamas and Dr. Bertus Eksteen. Dr.

Eksteen was the recipient of the 2007 Sheila Sherlock Award, and he

describes his research on the abrerrant immune process(es) in PSC on

this page:

http://www.basl.org.uk/awards.htm

As I understand it, and in very simplified terms, they think that

immune cells carry on their surfaces, molecules that act as ZIP codes

[For those not in the U.S., ZIP codes are postal codes used by the U.S.

post office to ensure that letters/packages get delivered correctly].

These molecules normally allow the immune cells to travel to the

correct tissue. But when these ZIP codes are expressed incorrectly the

cells can travel to the wrong tissue and cause inflammation in the

wrong place.

Best regards,

Dave
