Today is "Global Communication Shutdown Day," so designated by a non-profit in Australia. They are distributing "Charity Apps" to donors who pledge not to use Facebook or Twitter for a day. In theory, the non-communication mirrors the inability of people with autism to communicate - and the donations are going to a number of autism causes around the world. Rather than close down communication today, I've chosen to dedicate today's newsletter and blog to... communication!

Speech Therapy for Autism

Speech therapy can help nonverbal people speak, and verbal people learn to use language to communicate fully. It's one of the very few therapies that virtually everyone in the autism community thinks is a great idea.

Picture Exchange Cards (PECS) for Autism

For people with autism who can't yet use words, picture exchange cards - and related communication therapy - are a wonderful way to connect with others. Picture cards are deceptively simple: it's well worth your time to learn more about just how they're used to build communication and interpersonal connections.
