Guest guest
Can anyone recommend a self defense class/boxing for teens on the spectrum. My son is going through public middle school and is dealing with alot of teasing and bullying. Yesterday he had a break down. He just couldn't take it anymore. I want to help build up his self esteem so he feels confident again. His self esteem is in the dumps right now. My son is high functioning, Aspergers and ADHD. Any other suggestions to building up self esteem are welcome. I am so happy to have a community I can go to and ask questions, exchange thoughts/suggestions or just vent and cry with other parents going through similar circumstances. Thanks for starting and continuing this group. It's a god send. Thanks, Lissette

Guest guest
Lissette, I was given the info on a police officer that teaches self defense. I just have to look for the number. E-mail me privately to remind me. As for the bullying-go to the school and file a report so you put them on notice. Where is this happening? Guest guest
How awful... The school is responsible for keeping our kids safe. I don't know your particular situation but with any child, they need to report any teasing or bullying incident to an adult. If he struggles with being able to identify bullying versus teasing (that may be playful), he could be eligible for a related service of counseling on his IEP that can help him learn to differentiate. Adult intervention is what stops bullying. Next, here are 2 great karate schools and I know the owners would be extremely willing and able to help your son gain the confidence and skills he needs to feel better about himself and feel able to protect himself should he need to... Guest guest
Unfortunately our son isn't in karate anymore but one thing he got out of those classes that helped in dealing with hitting at school was "blocking". We focused on blocking because at school kids can get in trouble for hitting even if someone hits them first. We had to practice blocking at home very often and for a long time before he ever did it on his own. He it took a while for him to start using enough strength to be effective and he was very slow to get his arms up. One day he reported that a kid at school tried to hit him on the head; he said, "I blocked it, Mom! I really blocked it!" He was very pleased with himself. :-) The blow came from overhead while he was sitting down. My son got both arms up and crossed at the wrist just in time. Then he told the teacher! Of course, that was in elementary school. Next year he'll be in middle school and we're nervous again. That practice also seemed to help him develop his reflexes so he avoids accidental injury better, too. Until you find an appropriate class you might want to check for videos about bullying at the library and online. http://www.stopbullyingnow.com/index.htmThis is an animated video. I think they show them in schools. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n94RUx0WTikI wish you all the best. How awful... The school is responsible for keeping our kids safe.
