Indian Ridge Middle School 

9:00am – 10:00am

Foundations of Behavior Presenter: Green [Room: 119]

This training will offer participants an introduction to behavior concepts. Participants will gain an understanding of the functions of behavior, different types of reinforcement, and ways to be

proactive in dealing with challenging behaviors. 

Heart Smart: Understanding USDA’s My Plate Presenter: Darlene Moppert [Room: 118]

During this session, the participant will understand the relationship of diet to obesity, heart disease and other life style related diseases. Participants will learn about the new MyPlate as a way

of easily assure adequate intake of healthy foods. 

Knowing the Lingo of Special Education Presenter: Stacey Hoaglund [Room: Media Center]

Special Education has a language of its own. School staff sometimes uses letters to represent labels, curriculum or strategies, etc. This can be very confusing to parents who are unfamiliar with the “system.,” This training will not only clarify these terms for parents, but will also explain the history of special education including IDEA and ADA laws that have gotten us this far in the journey to provide education to students with disabilities.

 9:30am – 11:00am

“Brain-Based Learning for Mathematics: Assisting Struggling Learners” Presenter: Kitt Kelleher [Room: 122]

Helping students who are struggling in mathematics through music, color, smells and movements are just some of the topics that will be discussed and practiced during this 90 minute presentation. Participants will learn how to incorporate simple strategies to help increase students’ engagement and memory during mathematics lessons. Research- and evidenced-based techniques from the works of Jensen, dr. Anita Archer, and Dr. Spencer Kagan are highlighted and utilized within this session.

 10:15am – 11:15am

Creating an Effective IEP Presenter: Stacey Hoaglund [Room: Media Center]

The key to developing an effective IEP for your child with a disability is communication. It is pivotal that, especially in times of distress you may feel over your child’s disability, that you remain focused on the importance of conveying your desires for your child to the “IEP team.” Attend this training to learn how to become activity engaged in the development of your child’s IEP.

 Plant Power! Your Key to Fitness, Vitality, Waist Management Presenter: Darlene Moppert [Room: 118]

During this session the participant will understand the “buzz” about plan based nutrition (fruits, vegetables and grains) and their role in health, fitness and performance.

 The Reading Comprehension Challenge: What Can You Do? Presenter: Lori Wise [Room: 119]

This workshop will provide a brief description of why students with special needs demonstrate difficulties in the area of reading comprehension. An overview of strategies to address these challenges will be shared. Reading comprehension strategies to be presented will focus on the comprehension needs of elementary school-aged students.

 11:30m – 12:30pm

Individual Educational Plan for Parents Presenter: Stacey Hoaglund [Room: Media Center]

Your child’s IEP is the key that opens the door to educational programs, curriculum, strategies, placement options and the like. An effective IEP can drive a student’s educational program to meet their unique and individual needs. Attend this training to learn about the process of the IEP and how what is found in the Present Level of Performance impacts the services and placement options for your child.

 Transition Presenter: Lou Ruccolo [Room: 119]

Participants will learn about transition planning and how they can become more active in the process. Transition planning is part of the IEP process and should begin by age 14. Legal requirements of IDEA 2004, the availability of adult service agencies, and options for what lies ahead after high school will be discussed.
