And what better time to learn about new resources that can empower us with the knowledge to help our loved ones on the spectrum? Free online Conference on Safety and Crisis Prevention Autism College, in partnership with the National Autism Association (NAA), is presenting a free on-line conference on Autism Safety and Crisis Prevention, sponsored in part by The Social Express. The following topics will be addressed in a series of interactive webinars: bullying prevention, suicide risk, wandering, sexual abuse risk reduction, and preventing the use of restraints and seclusion. The webinars will be held on Saturday, February 11, Wednesday, February 15, and Saturday, February 18. There will be a Q & A moderated by Chantal Sicile-Kira after each webinar. More information on times, presentations, and the experts presenting can be found here. To register for free, go here. For those who register, we'll be sending instructions early next week on how to participate in the webinar, and how to post your questions for the presenters to reply. FROM THE NEWSPAPER (BLOG) In anticipation of our online conference, we've posted a blog in our Autism College newspaper about the webinar on Bullying. Keeping in the theme of Autism Safety, here is a Psychology Today blog on the safety concerns of individuals with autism. SUGGESTED READINGS FROM MY BOOKSHELF Three autism - related books I have been enjoying this month are: Apps for Autism: An Essential Guide to Over 200 Effective Apps for Improving Communication, Behavior, Social Skills, and More! Speech Language Pathologist Lois Jean Brady wrote this book in order to educate parents, teachers, and other professionals about the breakthrough method she calls “iTherapy”—which is the use of Apple products Understanding Death and Illness and What They Teach about Life: An Interactive Guide for Individuals with Autism or Asperger's and their Loved Ones. Author Faherty offers detailed, concrete explanations of illness, dying, life after death, losing a pet, and numerous other issues. Seven Keys to Unlock Autism: Making Miracles in the Classroom (from the founder of The Miracle Project). The book is based on the unique approach used by Elaine Hall and Diane Isaacs of The Miracle Project, a musical theater program for children with autism and their peers and siblings.
