Dear sList@..., We are extending the early and group discounts for the Portland, OR, workshops presented by myself and Dr. Pam Crooke on preparing your students now for the transition to adulthood. The new deadline is now November 2, but please register soon for these workshops on November 9-10 or the same ones on December 1-2 in Concord, CA (San Francisco Bay Area). This is such a timely topic - feel free to forward this information to therapists, parents, etc., who might be facing these transitional issues - and read my "closing remarks" at the bottom of this newsletter. We've also just placed on our website, Where to Begin, a detailed description of what books and strategies to start with for different age groups as they are learning about Social Thinking and related lessons. Plus, we link to an article by the nonprofit GreatSchools on the need to include social skills in IEPs that I was interviewed for. And just a reminder, we've opened new December 13-14, 2010 Boston workshop dates (sorry, the October dates sold out), plus workshops in Dallas, the Phoenix-area and Baltimore... Please read more on all this below and on our website!

Preparing Your Student Now for Adulthood

"With an 11 year old son, I wondered before heading into the workshop if he was perhaps too young, but I understand now that it's never too soon to start the slow and careful transition into adulthood and independence..." - that's what one attendee of these workshops stated. As she suggests, transitioning to adulthood requires us to begin planning early, then actively targeting transition issues in high school, including learningabout expectations of the adult world and how to teach them to our youth. We will also explore how adults need to change some of their teachings to encourage our students growth towards increased independence.Read more on Portland OR Workshops November 9-10 Read more on Concord CA Workshops December 1-2

Where to Begin! - Social Thinking Books and Related Strategies

We've been asked many times to come up with more detailed descriptions of books to help guide professionals and parents alike on where to begin teaching Social Thinking. We've come up with that document! We broke down the questions by age group, topics (such as IEP goals and meetings, targeting academic problems, depression, etc.) and discuss the "stepping stones" of the various curriculums. And we include not only books authored by Social Thinking therapists but also those of other well-known professionals. Read more (just scroll down a little on website home page)

Socially Curious and Curiously Social Called "A Highly Recommended Book"

"Finally a concrete, easy to read and fun guide has been written for students with Asperger's Syndrome, non-verbal learning disabilities and other social learning issues that spells out the steps to social success: A Highly Recommended Book," wrote reviewer and occupational therapist Barbara ." This "get real" discussion for your teenage and older students to read themselves helps them to better understand what really happens inside our minds when we share space together and includes many practical strategies.Read more

called "the leading expert in the field of social skills" in GreatSchools article on IEPs

was interviewed by GreatSchools, a national nonprofit organization, on the need to include social skills in IEPs. The article, "Will make eye contact: How to write social skills IEP goals that work," by Valle Dwight, states, "According to Winner, an author and the leading expert in the field of social skills (what she calls "social thinking"), this is an emerging field with very few experts to answer the questions. At the same time, she says, social skills are one of the most important predictors of a child's success..."

Workshops in Phoenix, Dallas, Baltimore!

Again, we apologize for anyone who wasn't able to register for my Boston workshops on October 25-26, but in response have added new dates in Boston: December 13-14, 2010. Plus, early bird registrations are still active for my workshops in Baltimore, Phoenix and Dallas (and Portland, OR, and Concord, CA, mentioned above). Please register soon and FAX your group purchase orders in as soon as possible. Read more

It takes a lot of work to think about the complexities of the social mind and then how to incorporate some of what we are learning in our daily interactions. Notice as adults how much more we understand about the social process than can actually do well ourselves! We need to keep that in mind as we work with our students...so that we set realistic expectations for our students and their family members. Our workshops that focus on adulthoodprovide information that is critical for us all to think about so we can help to prepare our students for the real world. Both days offer information that can be used to help navigate our students towards taking on more responsibility for learning about the social learning process and defining for them the expectations of the adult world they will gradually be entering into.
