Guest guest
What is an autism cluster there in Broward schools? Does it include mainstreaming, is it a separate class, do they structure the classroom by functioning level? Thank you.
Guest guest
I've asked myself that question before, what is an autism cluster? Who manages it? What do they do? Age groups? Guest guest
An autism cluster is what they call the self contained classroom for kids with autism in Broward. You generally see this in the elementary schools. Not all schools have a cluster though. They are typically small teacher/para ratio. Most of these kids are at the very minimum are mainstreamed during specials (art, music, etc.) and lunch. However, some kids (depending on how they are functioning) can have the opportunity to be mainstreamed during some type of academic portion with the gen ed classes. Guest guest
Thank you for the explanation. Do you know if these classes, be in elem or middle school, are at all arranged by functionality? in other words "high funcitoning" lower functioning, aspergers, etc? Also, for any one with kids who are multi diagnosed (mine is pdd nos and mood disorder, tourettes), does Broward have other types of classes? thanks. Guest guest
Some schools say they arrange by functionality, though I personally haven't seen it. Some years I've seen some pretty severe behaviors and some years it may be a little better. Though most Aspergers kids are typically not in a cluster, they typically are in some type of supported gen Ed class and pulled out for reading or whatever the child needs.I'm not sure about others Ese types of class, I think some Elementary schools may have other types of classes. Though once they reach middle school a lot of these kids are all lumped together in a self contained SVE class.Sent from my iPad Thank you for the explanation. Guest guest
A cluster simply means a group. Some of the elementary schools in Broward have IND clusters (which is a group of classrooms for students diagnosed with Ind. ex: Maplewood elem) )and some schools have ASD clusters. The Broward "standard" model for students diagnosed with ASD is an elementary school with 4 classrooms, a speech-language pathologist and a "visiting" OT. There is also an ESE specialist and an autism coach. All the cluster teachers are certified in ESE. There may be two teacher assistants per cluster classroom. However, there are some clusters with 5 classrooms and perhaps 2 or 3 classrooms. Some of the students do not mainstream, while others others are mainstreamed in math, reading etc. About 30 of Broward's elementary schools have autism clusters. The clusters have district program specialist and behavior specialists assigned to the school. These schools receive extra money for their ASD students. Some students with ASD do not participate in the cluster programs because they do just fine in the gen ed classrooms. The cluster programs are for students in kindergarten until middle school. The district sets the norms and guidelines regarding the curriculum and general procedures used. Although students usually are grouped depending on their skills, there should not be a huge age difference between the students in the class. Therefore, there may be a class with k-1 or even 2nd, another class with grades 3- 5. One class may consist of students who work on pre-academic skills and access points, and another class may consist of students who are able to read on grade level and take the FCAT. Broward does not have a "supported gen ed". You can ask for a tour of a cluster if you want to see how this works. Simply call the school's autism coach and arrange it. Then you can see it for yourself and ask the coach the questions you have. H.T.
