Innovations in Developmental Disabilities Seminar Series

The Florida Center for Inclusive Communities announces its 4th Year of Seminar Series. We provide a series of speakers including family members of children with disabilities, faculty, and self-advocates with disabilities that present on the most innovative and relevant topic. The series provides an interdisciplinary opportunity and experience for students and faculty as well. Please bring your lunch and join us monthly through April. Faculty encourage your students to attend or attend with them as a part of a class assignment. See the attached poster for an overview of speakers. We will send reminders in plenty of time each month.

Janet Hess is the mother of a 17-year old daughter who was born with hydrocephalus and has significant learning disabilities, as well as a typically developing 13-year old daughter. She works in the Department of Pediatrics in Adolescent Medicine at USF College of Medicine. Janet’s role is Project Director for Florida Health and Transition Services (FloridaHATS), a new program within the Florida Dept of Health.

Nila Benito is coordinator of community supports for the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. Nila’s primary focus is to help her sons with autism, , age 20, and ph, 19, be the best they can be. Through her work at USF, she promotes inclusion, positive behavior supports, customized employment, and positive outcomes for and a greater understanding of people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Janet Atkinson is the mother of an adolescent son with special medical and learning needs. Janet is the Director of Family Support and Outreach Services for Infants & Young Children of West Central Florida, Inc. and has served as the Vice President of the Superintendent’s Exceptional Student Education Advisory Committee for Hillsborough County Schools for 3 years.
