Guest guest
There is a possibility that the legislature could undo some of the veto's that Governor Crist did affecting disabilities. Would be prudent to find out what intentions are in this area. Anyone who has any information that could confirm any intension's of the legislators that you may be aware of would be appreciated. Regards, Ven Sequenzia President Autism Society of America State of Florida Chapter Legislators to convene one-day special session St. Pete Times 11/3/2010 Legislators to convene one-day special session Florida's Republican legislative leaders, fresh off winning veto-proof new margins in the House and Senate, plan to announce a one-day special session on Nov. 16 to override a couple of Gov. Charlie Crist's vetoes. Incoming Senate President Mike Haridopolos and incoming House Speaker Dean Cannon will hold a press conference in Tallahassee to announce their plans. As the Times/Herald reported two weeks ago, the plan is to use the day devoted to swearing in new members to also override a handful of vetoes from Crist. Among them is Crist's controversial decision to veto from the budget a $9.7 million line item intended to help the Shands teaching hospital and two others that would have made it harder to take away tax breaks for agricultural land and would have tightened environmental regulations. The Republican sweep that consumed the nation left only 51 Democrats in the Florida Legislature last night. The Senate now has a 28 to 12 Republican majority, while the House Republicans have a margin of 81 to 39.
Guest guest
Was there money for persons with developmental diabilities that was vetoed? I believe that they are just overriding some of the budget items and non controversial bills. Please let me know if I am wrong. LeachKtLeach@... Guest guest
I went to the FVDD meeting in Brwd Cty on Saturday. So far, things have not been vetoed although the 3 legislators in attendence were not without disheartening news, and they have called a special meeting in November to override several vetos. The consenus was that the health care initiative will probably be reversed and probably other things that Mr. Christ vetoed that had passed previously in the house & senate. Sen. Sobel feels that it is not as gloomy a forecast and that Mr. cannot afford to lose public opinion, however, remember that he does not really have any power and the conservatives that now govern will decimate most monies that have been given to schools/healthcare etc. Their suggestions were to continue to contact legislators in person if at all possible to get your voice heard. In attendence were the couple that fought for the right to live in a group home/community. Thanks to them there will still be places that our DD individuals can request to be a part of. Funding now may be a bigger problem. Guest guest
Senator Eleanor Soebal (sp?), Rep. Elaine Swartz are monitoring things, however we still need to be on top of it and keep them in the loop also. Doesn't the Autism Society have a lobbyist?
