Guest guest
Good afternoon:I need all your comments and advice. My son's school had change teachers four times this year and not all of them had ESE credentials, after several questions and meeting with the school, they have not resolved the issue and my son is not advancing in his first grade due to many changes and not with the right teacher. Is the public school responsible to place a teacher with credentials not substitutes. How I star to make this school to comply. It is affecting my child education and motivation. At this moment, I am very worry because it is almost the end of the year with little results.I appreciate your feedbackJeannette
Guest guest
Jeanette: the public school is not responsible to give your child a teacher trained in autism, BUT they must be trained in ESE. The first place you complain is the principal because he's the one who decides who gets hired. If the principal is disinterested then go above him and complain to the District ESE superintendent. Whoever is teaching has to follow the IEP and the goals on the IEP. Ask for data on a weekly basis so you can make the school district accountable. Call a child study meeting to go over the IEP goals with the present teacher and find out how they are going to meet those goals.Get it on the IEP in accommodations that you want Data on a weekly basis. Whoever is teaching has to be accountable for the IEP goals. If that is not happening then you should call the district to find out who your autism resource person is and have them come in and observe your son. They usually make recommendations that the teacher will follow. Just remember in the public school system you have legal recourse...if your son is not receiving FAPE then you can take them to mediation....hopefully they will be compliant before it gets to that point. Guest guest
hello. I am a pulbic school teacher and sadly many principals may do what is good for the school, but not necessarily what is good for the students. Teachers are permitted to teach out of field (outside their area of certification) for one school year. As a kindergarten teacher, i would be upset if I were moved to 5th grade, but as a parent of a child with autism, it should not be accepted. I would advise getting an advocate first to accompany you to a meeting with the ESE department. Bring in the research that proves that our children need consistency, then the documentation of ALL the changes. There is a child in my school that has an advocate that accompanies the parents to all meetings and everyone hates those parents b/c they are "difficult" that child gets everything that those parents demand. I hear the teachers complain about it doing some of it, but they do it because they are afraid, which shouldn't be the reason, but you can't care whole heartedly until you have ealked in our shoes, so even if they think you are an ogre, so what - you are not there to make friends, you are there for your child. Good luck and be strong. Your voice deserves to be heard. Guest guest
No, sorry. Only one advocate from one agency. In some instances, a child may not meet the criteria in order to qualify for advocacy services from us. United Cerebral Palsy does not have the same criteria that we do. An advocate should be able to address almost all your issues related to school. Robin Hello Robin:I have an advocate from Cerebral Palsey since last week. Can I have another advocate to address other issues?Jeannette

Guest guest
I second the recommendation of Stacey Hoaglund. I decided not to take any meeting with the school without an advocate by my side. Here is the info: Family Network on Disabilities of Broward County.
