There should be someone in your area who takes such cases based on a percentage of the settlement, and who will stick with the case to the finish. Sounds to me like there was probably a conflict of interest in that attorney's handling of your case. Possibly the other side hired him away from you, or something. That is not ethical, and can get a lawyer disbarred in most states, but they do DO it. You might call the local office of the Bar Association and get a complaint form and file against that attorney, as well. It doesn't cost anything, and will put it on record that you were not properly represented. I would point out on that complaint that the question you would ask of the firm, is ..."Does loss of life have to occur for it to qualify as malpractice, and deadly neglect?" Keep us posted, honey. Try some of the smaller attorney firms rather than the big name places.. might have some luck.
