Guest guest
Hi Lynn--I am in the same boat. I have been type I diabetic for 32 years and have NEVER had any normal readings. Mine usually shuffle from 30 to 600. I am diagnosed as Type I insulin dependent insulin resistant brittle diabetic. No matter how well I follow the rules and do all the things a " good " diabetic does I still don't get good readings. What most people consider " normal " readings my body treats them as low readings. When everyone else says their blood sugar was 130 and too high I have to laugh to myself and wish that was too high for me, but it is normal for my body. You might ask your doctor about brittle diabetes. Some do not believe it is even a " real " diagnoses, but I have had three different diabetes doctors give me the exact same diagonsis. They weren't even at the same area of the country. Anyway, just a suggestion. Hope you figure things out. Sharon Type I-1974 question Hi~ Does anyone use a protein drink? what type? Also, My readings are all over the place.....anywhere from 300 to 80 and I can't seem to find what causes the huge fluctuations......and when I hit 90 or below I am experiencing low blood sugar symptoms --although that is not a low reading...would this be due to having such high readings most of the time? Guest guest
I use mine for a quick snack. Mix it with milk and there are the carbs that a person needs. It does honestly keep you full for a while, and not needing to eat... I do it because it is easier and faster than making a snack. Just throw into a glass with some milk, stir and drink! Its good stuff =) Angelia in OR Re: question > Lynn, > Just curious... what benefit do you expect to get out of using a protein > drink? > To me, I would think it would simply involve additional calories (and > maybe > carbs too) that would be consumed without the benefit of actually getting > the satisfaction of eating! ;-) > But, maybe I'm missing something? > > Mike > > > >> >> Hi~ >> Does anyone use a protein drink? what type? >> Also, >> My readings are all over the place.....anywhere from 300 to 80 and I >> can't >> seem to find what causes the huge fluctuations......and when I hit 90 or >> below I am experiencing low blood sugar symptoms --although that is not a >> low reading...would this be due to having such high readings most of the >> time? >> >> Thanks >> Lynn >> >> >> >> >> >> Diabetes homepage: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes/ >> >> To unsubscribe to this group, send an email to: >> diabetes-unsubscribe >> Hope you come back soon! >>

Hi Rene, Washing your hands in warm water before pricking will help. Massaging your fingers will help. Also, you may need to adjust the setting on the lancet device. hugs Eunice

Guest guest
Are you using a different finger every time you prick yourself? If not you really should. I know once in awhile if I have to do some extra pricking or for some reason I have to prick the same finger more than once in a day the blood suppy does seem to get less and harder to get. Try using different fingers each time and in a different spot. Lois Re: Question I use alcho wipes what the doctor office uses. My device is set on > #2 that is also what the doctor also had it on to. > > thanks for replying back Wash your hands with soap and water. Warm water. Works much better than the alcohol. I was told by my physician and by the diabetes educators that is was unnecessary to use alcohol swabs on your fingers when you test. The reason being that the blood flow make the risk of infection virtually non-existant AND the added negative side effect of the alcohol is the drying that it does to the skin. The same with injecting yourself if you take insulin. The injection is done with a sterile needle and unless you have been rolling around in the dirt, the risk if infection is much less than the drying that the alcohol will do to the skin. Even if you do feel the need to use the alcohol, do so after washing your hands in warm water. The washing action will stimulate the circulation as will the warmth of the water. Guest guest
Hi. I learned in diabetes class that your suppose to prick the side if your finger below the nail. the reason given is your finger will lose feeling after some time if the pad is used all the time. and your not suppose to have to sqeeze your finger hard to get blood, I under stand it don;t give a correct reading doing it that way. I've just startted useing the side of mine. Bill Cal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > my finger's I realy don't want to sqeese the heck out of my finger > just to get enough blood to be tested? Guest guest
I agree it was long ago discovered that using alcohol can do more harm than good. Just soap and water will do the same thing but I never bother anyway and even inject through anything, anywhere without problems. No sense no feeling I guess!! <<grin>> If you ain't getting a big enough sample of blood to test on then you ain't digging deep enough as the saying goes. Take care. Guest guest
As I understand it there are more capillaries close to the surface on the side of the finger then on the pad. Also it sticks in the back of my mind that the sides are less sensitive then the pad. Both have to do with how we use our fingers. I don't see why there would be any difference in the BS readings between that taken from the side of the finger and the pad. You can try running warm water over your fingers for a short while before you take a sample. It seems to help with the blood flow. Re: Question Hi. Guest guest
Absolutely and it really doesn't make any difference where you get the blood from as long as there's enough of it. Take care. Guest guest
Ask your PCM to refer you to a dermatologist or some other specialist. I'd be concerned about a PCM that 1. " Doesn't have a clue " and 2. Doesn't refer you to someone who might/does. > > I am having an odd sorta problem, can't find anything much on the web and > you guys impress me as being a pretty smart group lol.
