Forging into the New Year with a Precedent of

Excellence

Among

the accomplishments that

ARI saw in 2010, continuing its 43-year track record of pioneering

work

in the autism community, here are some of our editor's favorites:

Outreach

ARI publications, including the crucial Pediatrics

paper on gastrointestinal problems in autism, were translated into 15

languages, including Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian, Chinese,

Russian, Armenian, Hindi, Turkish, and Arabic.ARI sponsored a retreat that was attended by

many adults with autism spectrum conditions for the purpose of

discussing ways in which ARI can better serve the autism community.

Research

ARI awarded over $350,000 in grants to

scientists whose work will have a direct impact on the lives of those

on the autism spectrum. ARI helped fund and promote a tissue bank for

the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the

University of land and, more recently, at the Digestive Function

Laboratory Repository at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Additionally, this year ARI began funding a specimen bank for

non-autistic individuals to provide proper comparison controls for

researchers.ARI funded a major consensus meeting on early

diagnosis and early intervention. In collaboration with Autism One, ARI

also sponsored several consensus meetings on seizures. Reports for both

consensus meetings will be submitted for publication in 2011.

Networking with Other Autism Organizations

ARI was instrumental in establishing the Global

Autism Collaboration with the help of several other autism

organizations. The aim of this collaboration is to network and to

provide support to autism organizations worldwide.

The staff at ARI are dedicated to improving the quality of lives for

families and individuals with autism spectrum disorders. For more news

about the work of ARI in 2010, please visit ARI's website.

Serving Us All

ARI has several projects related to adult

concerns and autism that are designed to bring together professionals

and adults on the spectrum to determine how to better serve this

population. In November, ARI launched a quarterly e-newsletter called

the Adults with ASD ARI E-Bulletin. This e-Bulletin is devoted

entirely to topics related to adults with autism spectrum conditions.

It is intended to provide multiple perspectives on adult life and to

build bridges of understanding across the generations, professions, and

affiliations within the autism community. To read the first issue of

this e-Bulletin, click here.
