Improving a child's attention, focus,

and function through self-regulation

Self-regulation, also known as

sensory modulation, is a foundation skill needed for all children to sit

quietly, attend and learn. The goal of sensory modulation is to get the

child into a calm alert state, a state in which the child is alert, attentive

and eager to learn. A child with sensory modulation disorder (SMD) may

display any or all of the three types of modulation difficulties. They may be

a sensory seeker, passive under-responder or an over-responder. This workshop

will explore the types of SMD seen, characteristics of each type, and

strategies to improve the child’s attention, focus and function. Videos

will be used to clarify the characteristics and behaviors seen. Time will be

allotted to answer questions.

Surrogate Parent Training

Do you know a caring adult who would be interested in

serving as a Surrogate Parent volunteer to help a student who needs

assistance in making decisions regarding their education? This is a

rewarding opportunity to make an important difference in the life of a

child. The Surrogate Parent Training provides information and resources

to interested individuals so that they may represent students with

disabilities in the special education process when no parent can be

identified, the parents’ whereabouts are unknown, the child is in

foster care, the child is an unaccompanied homeless youth or the child is a

ward of the state. Surrogate Parent volunteers receive a background security

clearance (fingerprinting). School Board employees are exempt from

participating.
