Guest guest
I believe rice chex has 50% of the daily recommended allowance for iron. An easy way to add iron to your child's regular cereal product or just as a treat is to add 1/2 cup of raisins to it. Half a cup of raisins is about 3.3 mg of iron. 6 slices of peaches (fresh) have about the same amount of iron. One ounce of Pumpkin seeds as a snack is also about 3mg of iron. Guest guest
Other food sources of iron [if you can get him to eat it]: meat, liver, spinach, kale. Guest guest
better to get iron drops and give it to him in juice, or other acid drink like lemonade, even fruit drink. The acid in the juice will help him absorb the iron better than cereal will. The phytin in cereal prevents iron absorption and it gets worse if you add more iron to the cereal. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9094880 > Hi, I am looking for a high iron cereal for my 5 y.o. Guest guest
Spinach and Kale, while they have a lot of iron, also make it hard to absorb that iron because of phytates. If you do use them, add lemon juice or vinegar to improve absorption. Beans, Prunes and molasses are also high in iron. If you add beef or vitamin C to any food, it can triple iron absorption from that food. And do not give an iron source along with other minerals. there are only so many boats to carry the passengers (minerals). Don't add more passengers (calcium, zinc, magnesium) > Other food sources of iron [if you can get him to eat it]: meat, > liver, spinach, kale. > > > > >> >> I believe rice chex has 50% of the daily recommended allowance for >> iron. Guest guest
Well as a GF Adult I have always enjoyed eating Mesa Sunrise. It has many GF grains and thought it was pretty nutritious...but I just looked up it's iron content and it has 6% of daily requirement....compared to rice chex which has 50%. Not to Shabby Chex!!! I am shocked. Good Luck!!!To: sList From: danwohl@...Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2010 20:36:49 +0000Subject: any recommendations for high-iron GFCFSF cereal for 5 y.o. w/anemia?
