If you contact the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (fddc.org) they will send you for free their book on sexuality through the ages which may help you. Jane,There is a great website called Brainpop which illustrates every and any subject under the sun (including puberty) in a fun, educational, informative way.  I signed up my 13 year old to the home/school option for $99 a year.  He uses it all the time for different things of interest.

Hope this helps.Caroline

I haven't found a good book for a boy on the spectrum. But, we have taken books written for typical boys and cut them apart to piece together an appropriate book that is not overwhelming but provides all the needed information. Since every child is different you can make it for your son's cognitive level.

I got the following books from the library and thought they were all good for

explaining puberty to my son. The best book we used was:

The " what's happening to my body? " book for boys by Madaras, Lynda. (there

is also one for girls by the same author)

We also used:

Teaching children with Down syndrome about their bodies, boundaries, and

sexuality : a guide for parents by Couwenhoven, Terri.

The boy's body book by Kelli S. Dunham

The boy's body guide : a book for boys 8 or older by C. Hawkins

These are all books that the Broward library has.

I used the same book for my daughter. However, I found that a personal social story was better received. She didn't understand all the internal changes and I got really good at deciphering her mood swings really really fast - almost like when she teethed :).
