" adverb form: waggishly noun form: waggishness Origin Approximately 1589; from English, 'wag': a witty amusing person who makes jokes, possibly a shortening of obsolete 'waghalter': gallows bird (a person likely to swing in a noose, applied humorously to a child) + the suffix '-ish.'
