Guest guest
You are right Ellen, it's a good question. However since it's Autism Speaks the group promoting this and the color of their puzzle piece logo is blue, I guess that is the reason. Guest guest
I agree, not everyone knows what Autism "really entails". My son, , is 20 y.o. "high functioning" Autistic, and last week I was almost DENIED to rent a property because after almost forcing me to bring my son (so they could meet him) the owner's wife (A NURSE) told a friend of mine that she was afraid he would become violent and disturb the neighbours, so she has hesitant to rent me the house!!!! My son is the sweetest kid you would ever meet, but he became anxious when I made him eat his dinner fast so we could run and meet these people, so, and the end of the meeting (2 hrs) he was pacing back and force and making some cooing sounds, that was all he did.... Guest guest
Couldn't have said it better. It's not about the color of the ribbon, or the logo, its about teaching people what Autism is, and what they can do to help. Schools need to educate their teachers, send them to seminars and we, as mothers, fathers, grandparents, etc of a person living with Autism, have the responsibility of doing the best we can to educate the community around us. Guest guest
Oh, I totally agree that people have now clue what Autism really is and we need more education, however I don't see this with "Autism Awareness". All I see is bumperstickers and fundraisers. I took a general psychology class at college just for fun last year and in the "Human Development" textbook section they had written everyithing about how important vaccines are (in a psychology class) but nothing about Autism. Schools and Universities need to talk about every aspect of Autism otherwise everyone who doesn't live with it is just "aware" that it is among us. What is especially important is that people need to KNOW that it is now effecting 1 in a 100 kids! Guest guest
I understand your fustration. I wanted to move to the Tampa area to be close to family for support after I graduated from OT school, however after speaking to many many people on the west coast including persons from the Card Center and various school and finding out that I would have to fight even harder for any services I decided to stay put. Its hard anyway you look at it. I was told to "come over" so that I could educate them about autism. It was hard enough to work as a single mom with a significantly impaired child at the time to go through it all over again. Don't give up hope - there is more over there now then there was but we all don't feel that there is enough anywhere. You have my empathy. Guest guest
People who don't live with autism every day will never know what we go through. You can't expect them to be as fully aware as we are. We all have different problems and issues, for example, I don't know what cancer is like or knowing someone very close to me living with cancer, but that doesn't mean I don't know what cancer is nor am I not empathic to that fight. I think most people know what autism is and nowadays everyone knows somone who is affected by autism, when someone finds out I have a child with autism, the response that I usually get is "oh yes, I have a (neighbor, a cousin, a friend) whose child has autism." So I think there is some "awareness" out there, but again you can't expect them to fully understand what we go through, nor drop everything and fight our fight. Within the autism community though, sad to say I see alot of disagreements. Because of the increase of the autism rate, we are a growing community. But yet overall, we are not a united group. We can choose to argue about what color the ribbon should be, or argue about vacinations, etc. etc, but at the end of the day how is that helping children AND adults currently diagonsed with autism? Why is there so little resources for our kids once they exit the schools? We need them ASAP or how else is our kids going to grow up and live their lives as independently and as productively as possible? To me this is the problem. I guess we all have to pick our battles, me, personally, I'd much rather spend my time fighting for these resources, then arguing about the color of the ribbon. > Honestly, people....who cares what color a ribbon is!! Guest guest
I meet people every day who say they do not know anything about autism, especially men. I talk to them and explain what it is, but many parents of kids with autism do not do this. It is the same thing with EBD. Most people do not know much about that either. If I told you that my son has EBD, would you know how his day is like? I don't think it is the school's responsibility to educate teachers about autism more than it is the state's job to send the nurses, doctors, postal employees, police officers and so on to seminars about ASD. This responsibility is ours, those of us who live with autism. We are a unique group, and we share the difficulties related to autism, but we come from many walks of life. Some are rich and can afford more therapies than others. Some are married, have a lot of support at home, while others are single and have few to lean on. Some are democrats and some are republicans. Some have children who are severe, and others have children who have very few problems. We don't have to agree on everything. If we share our ideas and listen to each other, we will learn and grow. We can unite when it comes to raising awareness and helping our kids. IF you don't like the disussion about the color of the ribbon, then don't let it bother you. Simply continue to talk about how you think we should provide support for our kids. Accept that other parents are affected differently than you, and may have more time on their hands. What is there for our kids after school? Well, what is there for anyone with severe disabilities? We are lucky to live in a country and a state where the school system has embraced autism the way it has. In April I will send a card or two to people who need to know more about autism. It could be a teacher, the principal, the cashier at Publix and the Dollar store, my dentist, my pastor, my cab driver, a neighbor, the waitress at my favorite restaurant, the schoolbus driver and who else? Guest guest
Hi:I find myself doing a lot of work spreading autism awareness but it is never enough...April is coming and at least is a month that I see more activity in the autism community and businesses as well. Anyhow, still a lot to do and in between so many battles for all of us. I agree with you but I do not exclude schools responsibilities because at the end the schools need to apply and deliver the resources, efforts, interest, etc in helping our children.Jeannette SuarezAutism Awareness MonumentsAdvocateTo: sList Sent: Tue, February 8, 2011 9:34:04 AMSubject: Re: Re: Plans for World Autism Awareness Day 4/02/2011 Well said! What can we, as a group, do to spread the word? Carolina Harp Sent From My HTC EVO > I meet people every day who say they do not know anything about autism, especially men. Guest guest
that is a great idea.Sent from my iPadOmayra Matamoros, MHSA, JD I meet people every day who say they do not know anything about autism, especially men.
