Guest guest
Good Morning:I have been searching for a better public school for my son. I have been visiting some schools in Broward and interviewed the ESE specialist of each school.Next week I have an appointment for Panther Run and I am still making more appointments. So far, I want to share some concerns with you and looking for your feedback.I found out that cluster teachers are not obligated to keep their knowledge updated with seminars, workshops, etc. It is only teacher's choice to go after work and have the interest to do so. If the principal is active in the autism community and has interest for the clusters to maximize all resources for special students education, then the principal may send the cluster teacher to some seminars. The resources and materials available to teach children in the spectrum are endless but some teachers are not willing to use that many, strictly they follow the curriculum and some follow the IEP goals. (All of us at some point ask ourselves, why my son is doing very good with his therapies but he does not accomplish even 50% of the IEP goals for the year?) Some teachers do not even get a copy of the IEP draft. At some point they will get a copy of the complete IEP and at some point teachers will review the goals. How long time in between? who knows. Other teachers have all the credentials but lack of other elements as "know how to praise, encourage and STIMULATE autistic children to learn and produce. The list is big but also I need to say that I know other teachers that deserve more than a gold medal and standout everyday for their job, enthusiasm and PASSION to teach children in the spectrum. How as parents can we change some of this situations with the district? How come the district does not mandate a cluster teacher to have more education to teach children in the spectrum? ABA is very popular and a proven method that cluster teachers need to know about it and learn other ways to teach the children in the spectrum. Believe or not some teachers do not know what ABA means. How we spend so much money in therapies but some schools are not supporting our children in their education. How I listened everyday parents complaining about schools teachers, educational system for children in the spectrum and how come we have to fight everyday for our children rights? Something is very wrong. Some principals concentrate more in other areas of the school leaving behind the cluster. Budgets go to another place. Does anyone regulates school budgets for clusters? Please if you are in my situation, write your feedback because my battle may be yours too.My son's school, Sheridan Park Elementary, has failed to my son.Thank you,Jeannette Suarez----- Forwarded Message ----To: janvanoy@...Sent: Fri, February 4, 2011 8:34:32 AMSubject: Thank you for your review! Guest guest
Hi Jeannette, It is so true what they say that the teacher makes the school. But also the principals and ESE specialists set the tone for the rest of the teachers in terms of priorities and what is tolerated and what isn't... My son has been at Everglades Elementary in Weston for 2 years now and I have been pleased with the work, knowledge and effort that the kindergarten and first grade cluster teachers have put into it. My son's teacher casually mentioned last week that has been trained in ABA. I think the school will probably be in the critically overcrowded list next year. We got so many student transfers from other local schools that were just not doing what they should be doing with their students. So, I am not sure how feasible would be to get a student in the school if they live outside the boundary. But the best source of information for that is the South Area Program Specialist. Good luck. Guest guest
My son's ESE teacher just attended a three day seminar on ABA therapy and now she is planning on getting more training in ABA because she sees the unlimited benefits it can have in the classroom. I sent her a flyer that was circulated from this group and it has now opened up a whole new world for many kids. The class was 150 dollars and required three Saturday attendances of at least 8 hours. The school would not pay for it, but the teacher paid for it herself. I am endlessly thrilled with her devotion and proud of her commitment to our special kids. I wish I could clone her. I know that there are many horror stories out there about public school and student's with disabilities, but for every horror story there is a positive story. For every bad teacher there is a good teacher. Thank you for your review! Thank you for submitting a school review. Guest guest
I feel your pain. I have been battling with Sawgrass Elem. since October to put an aide in my daughter's K class now that she is fully included. The teachers are amazing, but they can only go as far as the principal and ESE specialist will allow them to go. I'm currently investigating new options for next year as well. Guest guest
How old is your child? Can u share the schools that u interviewed and your thoughts?I'm moving to South Florida from California and still haven't decided where to live. My son is 6y and have been on a typical Kindergarten program with a 1:1 aide.It have been a challenging year so far, we have been dealing with some behavior problems caused by anxiety and not sure if general education is the best environment for him at this point. Thanks,RenataSent via BlackBerry by AT&TSender: sList Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2011 06:00:01 -0800 (PST)To: <sList >ReplyTo: sList Subject: Cluster teacher VS qualifications Good Morning:I have been searching for a better public school for my son.
