Please, if anyone can help. I have a client from may years ago that contacted me

today to say her son (possily 11 years old) with autism MUST learn to swallow

pills immediately!!! He is going to be hospitalized for ulcerated colitis if he

does not learn to do this over the next week. Can ANYONE please advise me where

to get help here in Boca Raton. She is waiting for me to get back to her with

some names as soon as I can. Please advise. I know they would be so grateful

for any help.

Regards, Joanne

I started with some warm liquid, then mini m & m's and massage right under the chin just above the throat (where the tongue is). Then worked up to larger pills.

I used to wrap the pill, hiding it, in a chunk of applesauce or yogurt. If the issue is fear of the pill and the child will let her spoon feed him a bite of applesauce od something creamy that may work.

I've heard of people having success with Oraflo (you can buy on oraflo.com), its

a cup with a spout that you put pills in and it somehow bypasses the gag reflex.

My son is much younger so we haven't tried it yet. But its supposed to be good

for age 4 and up and for adults who have trouble swallowing pills.

Good luck!

We use Pill Glide swallowing spray. Which we spay in my son's throat before he takes the pill. They also make sprays that coat the pill to make them easier to swallow. Here is the link to the cup to swallow http://www.oralflo.com/

my son takes about 6 pills a day...I crush and mix them with something to cover the taste and draw them up into a 10ml syringe. He takes them with a small amount of complaining and has a good drink to rinse them down. I use hersheys chocolate syrup for three pills and then the strawberry syrup with a bit on pomegranite juice and a bit of vanilla powder to mix the other three...the latter is the worst tasting of the bunch. He is nine now and has done this since he was born. I don't know why they would insist he learn to swallow pills unless perhaps the meds are time released....I know many children that do it this way. Its even the way they did it in the hospital but they had the luxury of an NG tube. When he was much smaller I used nectar of different flavors.

Also one of the meds that is not easily dosed is made into a suspension at a compounding pharmacy for me and flavored strawberry or whatever I chose...with a fee of course. But then I put it into the strawberry syrup with the other meds.

For us mixing the pill powder into a heavily flavored jello(raspberry or

lime)worked. You can also get Coke or cola syrup from the pharmacy and try

adding it to that. HRI pfeiffer sells a cup w/ a ledge in it that supposedly

helps swallow the pills, and they also sell the flavorings. Their site is:

The pharmacy order form is:

I taught myself to take a mouthful of water, turn my head toward the

ceiling, and open my mouth with the water still in there. I then

close my mouth and swallow the water at the same time.

Then I repeat, this time with dropping the pill into the water. As

soon as the pill hits the water, I immediately swallow, before the

pill sinks to hit the tongue. As long as I don't feel the pill on the

tongue, it is water to my brain.
