Staunton Sleep

These are my typical sleep experiences and how I cope with them;

I already know that I don't get enough " quality " sleep, and despite

taking doses of prescribed sleep meds that would knock out a charging

rino and following a regular routine to give the sandman the

opportunity to stop by and do his thing, it flat out doesn't happen on

any set schedule.

The only formula that even comes close to working may not work with

most people, I put on a DVD movie from a small stack of my favorite

sleep movies. Most of the time it's " Soylent Green " or the " Omega

Man " , not because it's entertaining but because it provides background

noise of a familiar variety.

The second part of the steps to sleep is I get out one of my zip lock

bags of chess pieces (StauntonCarver) and a hand full of mini files, a

Scotch-Brite pad and proceed to work on removing the casting flash,

parting lines and leveling out the base.

As the work progresses and my focus is on the task at hand, all those

little irritating issues start to dissolve away, nothing else matters

at the moment but the refinement of the piece I'm working on.

And the best part is that it doesn't have to be done tonight, there's

always tomorrow to work on it some more.

Distraction along with focusing my attention on a single task works

for me and I can sleep through the night.

I rarely can sleep properly if I can't do this seemly simple task.

That's interesting. I usually read to focus my mind on something other than my

problems. Sometimes I can get 8 straight hours, and other nights it gets broken

up into 2-3 hour segments with breaks in the middle of 1-2 hours. Since I'm on

disability, this is usually OK. If I had the stress of having to get up for

work, I would have so much anxiety over sleeping, I'd probably end up having a

breakdown. Glad you have a technique that works for you.

I like your method of getting to sleep, mine is knitting or crochetting, it is

my therapy, I have always said that, but I did not really understand that I was

actually reducing my stress from the day so that I could relax and get to sleep.
