Guest guest
Hi Guys, I noticed that pets have been mentioned. Animal dander can be rough on me, but the good that pets do exceeds and outweighs everything else. My wife and I have four cats (Zach, 14; Little Guy, 12; Tuffy Cat the only long hair, 4; and Peanut, 1). Each of the cats is unique and different. Their personalities are incredible. Then, we have two dogs (Bucky, 7; Indie, 7). Bucky is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a nice fairy saddle on his back. Indie, real name is Indigo, is 7 and a fine pure bred chow -- all black body, black mouth, and black tongue. Little Guy has the heart of a cougar and looks like a miniature version of one. He's my cat and no one dares to sit on my lap when he shows up. Even if he doesn't want to lay on my lap, he will go to war of my lap. It is funny. Zach, the oldest, is part Siamese and it shows in his personality. He is the real talker among the cats. He will come in at morning when I get up and talk to me. I think he is giving me the morning report like a good lad. I could go on, and probably will because I have a theory. Those of us with a chronic disorder such as fibro benefit from having someone who loves you no matter what, who don't judge the why of things, and isn't there to preach at you. I love it when the dogs come into my study and just want to love and be loved. The cats will come in when I'm off the PC and watching the news or some program I've wanted to see. There is real love going on. Indie has a true smile on her face when she comes in to see me, and her tail is going Warp 5! I love it and I do feel good when they come in a visit with me. The pain actually lifts some for me. All of you who have pets, why don't you write in about your pets. Tell us how your pets help you. Guest guest
Gene, I'm a pet lover too and we have 4 plus a turtle named Ernie. Ours consist of 3 dogs - Simeon (8, lab/rotti mix, about 120 lbs), (between 15-17, she won't tell her age, poodle mix, maybe 12-14 lbs and losing all her hair), and Herbie (5-8, rescued from shelter, lhapsa), and then our cat, Sammy who will be 14. Simeon is DH's dog but he has bonded to me. Last Sunday, when I was having such a difficult time, he actually used his body weight to push in the recliner bottom then braced himself so I could use him to stand. He follows me from room to room and is a fantastic guard dog when DH isn't home. This latest hospital adventure of mine has this poor dog exhausted. is my dog that I adopted from a friend. She has been a loving companion to me for over 12 years now and I know that the time is coming for me to make some tough decisions. At some point in her life she suffered 2 herniated disks in her low back and now her back legs are crippling up with arthritis so she stumbles and falls alot. Wait a minute - she sounds like me! Anyhow, she has given me such joy and has learned to talk (mutter). Herbie is my dog as well - I rescued him from the pound on his death day. He has bonded to me completely, but he and my DH do not get along and he snarls and snaps at my DH so despite the fact we've had him nearly 3 years, DH has said that he has to go. I am in the process of getting him placed with a group that is a no-kill group. I believe before me he was neglected and/or abused by men which is why he has issues with DH. Sammy is a very personable feline. He loves being petted and if I pull out a certain throw to curl up in my recliner, it's not long before I have a gray companion snoozing. He's such a happy contented cat that he will purr without being petted. He has thyroid disease so gets a pill every night in some wet food. He campaigns daily for his wet food earlier and earlier. And I agree. Each one of these animals waits for me to come out of the bedroom every morning. They all have to have their head pats and rubs. When I'm feeling horrible and laying on the recliner, they are as close as they can get to me. If they could all fit in my lap, they would, I know it. They've all been faithful companions and many tears have fallen on all of them over the years. I highly recommend anyone who doesn't have a pet but would like one to go and adopt one from your local humane society - it could change your outlook on this disease and how you feel. Plus, some animals are intelligent enough that with a little bit of work, they may be able to be trained to be assistance animals for you! Good point Gene, thanks for raising it! Guest guest
OK, I've been thinking about sharing the quirks of our 3 cats as each has her own funny trait. Our cats are Snuggles, age 12, Grape, age 6 or 7?, and Nadia, also about 6 or 7. Snuggles is a gray tabby, old, fat and has arthritis which limits her mobility. She got her name because from the day she and my daughter " found " each other(she was a stray), she loves to snuggle on our laps. Her quirk is that when she uses the litter box to have a BM, she likes to announce it to us afterwards. Grape is a tortie that we adopted from the humane society. They had given her that name because they 3 torties from the same litter, so they named them Grape, Raisin, and Plum. Grape was the only one left when we were looking for a companion for Snuggles. Grape's nickname has become Stinkerbutt because she sure can cause mischief. She gets on top of the kitchen cabinets or the big, tall entertainment center in the living room. We have a very cluttered house, so when she climbs over places, she's usually knocking stuff on the floor! She and Nadia play pretty well together. Grape likes to bully Snuggles which is a problem, but we don't know how to solve it for now. Anyway, her funny quirk is that she talks to her play things. It's usually a puff ball or she has a thing for wool hats and mittens. When she talks to them it's like she's taunting them. That's the only time she meows. Lastly we have Nadia. My youngest daughter had a friend who had to move to a place that wouldn't take pets, and the girl begged Allie, and she in turn begged me to take Nadia. Nadia is a beautiful Siamese-Himilayan mix. I'm not big on pure Siamese cats, but she really looks more like her Himilayan side. She has the softest fur we've ever felt. Even the vet has commented on how soft she is. Nadia is skittish, so only spends time playing with Grape for a couple brief periods during the day. She has a cute, kitten sounding meow. A couple years ago, she came up from the basement where she spends a lot of time, carrying a teeny beanie baby kitten in her mouth. She meowed and dropped it on the floor and spit out the attached dust bunnies. I laughed so hard because it was just like a momma kitty carrying her baby. Well, I maybe reinforced a behavior in her, because she then started bringing up dirty socks! She went through a phase where she brought up about 6 socks a day, and sometimes dirty underwear, or dishcloths! This behavior has settled down to just an occasional sock every now and then. So that's the story of our 3 cats. I've posted before that I find 3 cats to be too many. I get stressed over the litter boxes not being clean(my girls' job) and when Grape knocks stuff over or Nadia pees where she shouldn't. Snuggles likes to lay down right in the middle of our traffic pattern. Plus, the cost of the vet appts. does stress our budget. Take care. Guest guest
I have a dog, my furbaby Shyla. A Red Brindle Boxer/Pitt mix, she's definatly got the Boxer personalty and loyalty. She's a woman's dog that much is true. She loves everyone but when the day is done she's my baby. When my husband and I got her three years ago from the local shelter she was told to have wondered the streets of our small town for about six months without anyone seeing her. She's HUGE. So I have no idea how anyone would have not seen her. But anyway that is my baby. Vicki/Lady Vader www.freewebs.com/romanticdreamscometrue www.freewebs.com/victoriadutton Pets... Guest guest
O I have so enjoyed this thread on pets. I have always believed in the value of pets, actually all of mine have always had to work for a living until just reciently, but that does not diminish their value in love, or their devotion to me. Years ago when I lived in Texas, way out in the country in the middle of a 150 acre cow pasture I had a dog that was a Golden Retriever cross. She lived outside, but she stayed in a nice little nest under my bedroom window, she never set a paw in her nice clean doghouse! She always alerted me when there was a prowler and I never had any problems (my husband-at-the- time worked out of town and there were lots of transients along that hiway) So one night she did not bark or even growl, but she snarled so ferociously that it made the hair on the back of my head come straight up. She kept up a constant snarl and stayed right at the back door until I arived with the riffle! Then she walked right beside me leading me toward a part of the fence that faced the cow pasture. It was dark that night and I could not see anything, the flashlight did not show anything, but she was telling me that something horrible was out there. I finally fired the riffle into the ground a few yards into the pasture, I sure did nto want to hit a cow, I waited a few seconds and I fired again. The cattle had been a bit restless you could hear them, some of them moved into a different area of the pasture. After the second shot the dog stopped snarling and sniffed the air for a bit, then she was happy. I have never known what it was that alerted her, but the gunshots did the trick for her! Some folks thought it was a big cat, lion or something that was after the calves, it may have been cattle thieves. They never came back thanks to my dog! I have had lots of great dogs over the years, cried when they went on to their rest, but I am fast loosing my heart to the latest dog we have. She is part lab and part shepherd, one of a litter that was being given away in front of my store. She bonded with the dog we had at the time and was a great puppy, but the other dog got out in the road and got hit (that hurt me worse than loosing any dog in history) Now you cannot get Penny to leave the yard and she just hates to see cars moving! But her crowning achievement is that any time I have a headache or am having a flareup she is right beside me. She helps me get out of the chair, she sleeps beside my side of the bed, and a week ago when this blood pressure started to kick up, she really started to act funny, licking me fast and furious, barking at me for no reason and did not want to go outside! She was nudging me all the time, and if I was having a headache she was really upset. I have been on medication for the past 3 days and the BP is finally starting to come down a bit, she is not pestering me so much! Now that is different for me for sure! She is still just a puppy, only about 6 months old, and I just think that is great instinct for care! I cannot wait to see how she turns out as a dog! She is also the quietest dog I have ever had and she seems to be easy to train so far! Connie in Alaska
Guest guest
I only have one dog and she is a yorki and the love of my life. Very attached to me and doesn't take well to others. Got all her shots Monday so we can fly to Wa. She got really sick but is better now. Got rabies shot plus and a health certificate. She's worth every penny I spend on her and more. She has her own little house but sleeps with me. My cuddle bug. She's 3 yrs old and her name is Snickers. God just put her in my hands. She was a kennel dog used for breeding but she wouldn't ever take so I got her for a song. Animals loves us unconditionally. Isn't that wonderful, and seem to sense when we are feeling bad. Hope all of you have pets and are in a good state of helth today. God bless. Little LINDA --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Search. Guest guest
I am a huge animal lover, and if it weren't for my husband I'd have more than I do! I have three cats, Monster,15, who is just a bowl of jelly, Lupin, age unknown, who came to us with a torn up leg after being bit by a dog, (yes, I'm a sucker for strays...), and QT, 2, who, yet again, was a stray I brought in when she was just a kitten. Then there are my dogs.....Ronin, age 6, a great dane. He's 137, about 4 feet tall, and quite a puppy. He was going to go to the pound if I didn't take him, so I did. Cocoa, age unknown, a chocolate lab, who was a stray we picked up and my husband fell in love with (which is quite surprising, he hates animals), Pup Pup, age 3, Shih Tzu, a gift from my brother and sister-in-law, and last but not least, my new puppy, a Shiba Inu mix, about four months, just adopted from a kill shelter in Georgia, sent through the doggie railroad, and arrived in Iowa on Sunday. To tell all their quirks and funny stuff would take hours, so I just lay all this on ya and put the funny stuff in another post later!!! Guest guest
Wow - I don't know how you give them up ! I couldn't be a rescuer one because my HOA only allows 3 animals per house but I don't think I could part with them! I just recently (within the last 2 month) adoped a rescue baby - a 2 year old deaf pomeranian. She is the sweetest dog I've ever had. I can't figure out why someone would give this baby up. My vet thinks she was going to be a breeder but because she is deaf and also has the 'pom' cough, they couldn't breed her because both would pass down so they got rid of her The first few weeks in my house ever time I left I think she was afraid I wasn't coming back. And I know the first few times I took her in the car she was afraid I was leaving her. She's good now - knows mommy is coming home after work! LOL The other two (9 year old whippet mixes) have stopped sulking and they kiss her and play with her now. Dayzee is funny. She has been doggie door trained since the day I got her. So if she has to go in the middle of the night - she wakes me up by kissing my face all over, gets off the bed and goes, gets a drink and when she comes back she has to lick me all over again. Like I'm back, I'm back did you miss me? I missed you! LOL LOL She is such a sweetheart! hugs angela wrote: oh, gene, you are 100 % correct! i am an animal rescuer and i have my own staple of pets plus others through my home on a regular basis. right now, including fosters, we have something like 17 animals here right now. no matter how sad i am, hurt i am, upset i am...they make my day brighter. - in Missouri Pets... > Hi Guys, > > I noticed that pets have been mentioned. Guest guest
oh, ! thank you for adopting this sweet baby! so many animals are given up for something as simple as deafness. i have a silly deaf pug. i call her snuggle puggy and pugsley and i sing to her silly songs i make up for her (sung to the rubber ducky theme-snuggle puggy, you're the one! you make cuddles lots of fun! snuggle puggy, I'm awfully fond of you! -there are like 12 verses of it)...and she can't even hear me! she is a true dork....her tongue is too long so it hangs out of her mouth constantly and she runs in little circles until she gets too tired to run any more. but she is a big squishy love girl. as for letting them go....i love them all. truly. but when you have this many, mostly untrained, dogs in one house...it's easy to lighten the load as long as you feel confident in whomever you adopt to. i am quite nosey and ask a lot of questions etc. and i always say i will take them back. chewy and duckie, the pups, are going to their new home tonight and i am thrilled with these people. i will miss them, but i know they will be happy. of course, the hardest part of rescue is grooming. bathing several dogs at one time, clipping several at one time...very hard on the back, back of legs, and arms, and neck. of course, i clipped the pups in a schnauzer clip for their adoption...lord, can puppies wiggle! here and when i come home they all swamp me, jump on me, and have even knocked me down or into things. you would think they had been alone for years instead of me just going to the gas station 4 miles away or something! -ang Re: Pets... > Wow - I don't know how you give them up !
