Guest guest
I am a new member and wonder if anyone in Broward County, FL has the same concern/desire as myself. As a point of background: my devlopmentally/physically disabled son has spent most of his time (grades 1-7) in typical classrooms followed by ese classes and now homebound with teachers coming to his home classroom(i.e. he never attended a public HS). He recently turned 18 ...which initiated my search for great day programs in anticipation of his need in a couple years. While I have visited many programs, my son seems to fall in the middle of those served-ugh. In other words, he doesn't need a program to prepare him for workshop employment, but he also enjoys more stimulation/challenge than sensory/arts program that are great for those maybe a bit more profound than he is. To complicate things, he also would NOT be comfortable being in a wheelchair all day..but would certainly want access to computers etc etc. So, I am thinking of starting a day training program that would offer light academics arts, music, gardening, computers etc...which would also have the availability for beds/couches etc to ensure comfort. SOooooo, wondering if there would be any interst among you?????? Or perhaps there is a great program of which I am not aware? THANK YOU!!!! Guest guest
You may want to check into all the licenses that are required. They are extensive especially if you want to have contracts with Med Waiver, ticket to work, medical needs etc. I would advise you to look at what is out there (yes we know there aren't many options) ie: Lucanus, Tender Loving Care, Center for Independent Living etc for their day programs. Good Luck. To: sList Sent: Wed, February 16, 2011 7:09:58 PMSubject: Day Training Program I am a new member and wonder if anyone in Broward County, FL has the same concern/desire as myself. Guest guest
Thank you for your response!! I have already been to each of the programs that you mentioned below....that each fall short in some way. I have also completed all of the research re: requirements to be licensed/operator...and am in the process of being licensed. So,the question is: " If I build it, will they come? " ; ) In other words, are there other parents/caretakers that share my need/desire, that would be interested in considering a different option. I know this will not be easy..but I am committed and hope to be up/running by the fall. Obviously, I will need enrollments to minimize financial losses...my dream would be to break-even. sList , cheryl wrote: > > You may want to check into all the licenses that are required. They are > extensive especially if you want to have contracts with Med Waiver, ticket to > work, medical needs etc. I would advise you to look at what is out there (yes > we know there aren't many options) ie: Lucanus, Tender Loving Care, Center for > Independent Living etc for their day programs. Good Luck. > > > > > > > >To: sList > >Sent: Wed, February 16, 2011 7:09:58 PM > >Subject: Day Training Program > > > > > >I am a new member and wonder if anyone in Broward County, FL has the same > >concern/desire as myself. > > > > > >As a point of background: my devlopmentally/physically disabled son has spent > >most of his time (grades 1-7) in typical classrooms followed by ese classes and > >now homebound with teachers coming to his home classroom(i.e. he never attended > >a public HS). Guest guest
Congratulations! I would suggest that after you get your licensures, that you also become a medicaid waiver provider, then you will be put on a list of programs that support coordinators can tap into. Guest guest
I would be interested in more information. Where are you located and/or where would you locate the program? I have a 26 yo daughter and wasn't happy with the day care options. At the time we looked, my daughter also fell "in the middle." The programs didn't address the needs of a higher cognitive functioning [verbal] ASD individual who wasn't independent [needs guidance & training]. It wouldn't have worked cramming her into a small space with a lot of high functioning adults, and placing her with low cognitive & low functioning adults to get a higher ratio of care givers would have been terrible. She has also become very chemically sensitive, which complicates things for us. She currently attends the YMCA Adult afternoon program in Coral Springs and generally loves it, but I would like her to have more structure and stimulation. Thank you!! Meryl I am a new member and wonder if anyone in Broward County, FL has the same concern/desire as myself. Guest guest
Thanks Meryl....my son attended middle school in Coral Springs and his doctors are also located in Coral Springs... & not far away (with less restrictive zoning) I am working on a property in Pompano Beach on Atlantic Blvd...but nothing is yet finalized and I am still considering options. I am working towards a fall 2011 opening for a limited number of young adults (e.g. 15). I also believe enjoyment with structure and ongoing learning is possible...I have a MS in Human Resources and in my former life/career, I was a tenured teacher & administrator in NJ, who received many grants for innovative learning approaches. A computer lab, music, art, gardening , community news and small group (i.e.3) discussion/instruction ...along with health, safety & daily living skills will be part of indivualized plans created for each participant. As far as chemically sensitive... can you tell me more specifically about her chemical sensitivies (e.g allergic responses to cleaning products, food, etc)? I will be happy to stay in touch with you and let you know how I am progessing....emailing you details as they are finalized for distribution/promotion. My personal email is dianeDWA@... Warm regards, Diane Re: Day Training Program I would be interested in more information. Where are you located and/or where would you locate the program?
