Guest guest
Hi, I have a question. After years of migraines and aches and no lasting, discernible improvement, take this medication that medication.. I am wondering about " alternative " methods, not as a primary but just to help things along as it were. One of my primary problems at the moment is energy. every day i tell myself, i need to do these things tomorrow, and tomorrow arrives and i never have the energy, im always in pain, its easier to do it " tomorrow " . ive always been naturally flexible and in shape, and ive found that over the last few years as my migraines became debilitating and then i started realizing it wasnt just migraines but my entire body hurt, that i have less and less energy, less and less flexibility, and no tolerance for any kind of physical activity, which drives me up the wall, as someone who used to be incredibly active, and besides that I have children to raise, and even more to that point im homeschooling my children, I cant just " do it tomorrow " , tomorrow becomes their entire lives.. I need to find a way to improve this daily situation that has become my life. at any rate, im kinda in a slump which has probably spurned this need to find something that works better than what has been.. The migraines have been prominent despite all the medications thrown at me for years, and they pretty much just drug me with pain meds when nessecary(which is way too often for my liking.. im sure that many of us here have had that feeling many times).. and now with the diagnosis of fibromyalgia in november, it seems that they arent even bothering to find a solution, theyre just throwing stronger pain meds at me, with the repeated litany that theyve already given me every medication for migraines that would work for fibro, to no success. So i guess i am just wondering, how many here have tried an alternative method not nessecarily exclusively or anything, but at all, and has it helped? energy, pain? any of it? Im looking at the moment towards the meditative-method of yoga, something mild that is sill exercise, but calming. Something to relieve stress and get my body moving. im sure wht helps me may not help someone else.. im just kinda wanting some feedback, suggestions, etc, if anyone has any please. -Nina
Guest guest
Hi Nina, I have 5 yr old twins. I can NOT imagine homeschooling them and I was a teacher! You have your hands full! I have heard that acupuncture is really effective for migraines. I tried it for fibro, but I found that my skin is so sensitive that it hurt too much and didn't help anyway. I would imagine that med/yoga would be really good for you. I keep saying I'm going to do it, but haven't yet. Let us know if it helps and look into the acupuncture for your migraines. Guest guest
Nina, you have my highest regard when it comes to someone who home schools their children!!! I have two young adults now (23 son and 17 year old daughter) and I can not even begin to imagine trying to have home schooled them!! Especially with calculus, trig, chemistry.... You are an admirable lady for taking on that responsibility. Good luck!! N.
Guest guest
Ive actually already tried acupuncture for the migraines, as well as many other homeopathic remedies, and the run of the mill preventatives. i currently take topamax at the max dose for the migraines. The medications and natural remedies were tried before the fibromyalgia was diagnosed, and decided that it was probably the primary cause of the migraines. The acupuncture helped temporarily, giving me up to a full day of relief, only to have it come back the next day, or even just later that day, and since I am covered under Tricare(husband is active duty), they dont consider acupuncture to be a medical practice, so it is all out of pocket, and about $90 a session. Not something we can afford even truely once a month, much less on a regular enough basis to keep them at bay. which would end up being probably at least once a week, as I understand it the more you go on a regular basis as a preventative type method the better it works.. But simply too expensive. Which is one reason why im thinking the meditative type yoga approach, soothing the mind and relaxing the body, and once i learn the methods i can practice it at home even when not during a session im paying for. Basic yoga principles im already familiar with, I used to take yoga as a strength-building class when i was in shape, before all this.. but i want to approach it from a different angle this time.. see what it does.. > Hi Nina, > > I have 5 yr old twins. Guest guest
Nina, I have actually found Meditation/Yoga to be very helpful for my Fibro, migraines and stress. It is very relaxing and soothing for the mind and body. I also practice deep breathing, sometimes in conjunction with the Meditation/Yoga and sometimes on its own. I do a lot of stretching exercises as well. These all really seem to help at times when I feel really out of sorts (especially after a long day). Good luck with whatever you decide! Guest guest
Ahh im dreading it when it gets to that stage! I think the math skills will be pawned off on my husband. LOL. My oldest is 7 at the moment. Its columned addition and subtraction at the moment, and reading/ phonics. Those I can do, and personally i find it easier to do that on my own schedule rather than stick to a schools schedule, and homework requirements, when he gets the same things at home, with much less stress. But yea high school math and such.. Im not looking forward to that although the only thing I can say about teaching a high schooler is they are alot less dependent on every day teachings, its easier to give them the concept and let them go with it, vs right now I do have to guide him through things alot more,, since hes learning the fundamental basics of everything that he will learn later.. if that makes sense. > Nina, you have my highest regard when it comes to someone who home > schools their children!!! Guest guest
Nina, I haven't tried yoga or meditation, but have you thought of chiropractic care? Or massage? Or reflexology? All three methods may help your migraines. I used to suffer with them but don't any more. Another thought - have you had your hormone levels checked? That can sometimes trigger migraines too! Just tossing out some thoughts for you.....I use all 3 methods and they help. I don't necessarily have the energy I did before I was diagnosed, but I can function a whole lot better because I'm " in line " and detoxed. Guest guest
Hi Nina - Meditation yoga sounds good. I can also personally recommend seeing a chiropractor, as I love mine and it helps to have my spine aligned properly. I myself will also be starting massage therapy and I'm considering acupuncture. I have a problem with my energy level being my most disabling symptom. I have been working with my psychiatrist for the past 18 months to find the right combination of meds to give me more energy. My current med for energy is AdderallXR. It does definitely give me more energy, but there are some side effects we're hoping will go away. Mainly I do not like the excessive sweating I seem to do from this med. I also am on Cymbalta which is thought to be one of the more energizing anti-d's. But like you said, we're all individuals, so YMMV. Take care. Jeanne in WI Hi, I have a question. Guest guest
Chiropractic care is another one that isnt covered by the insurance, and the chiropractor actually has to be very careful with me because I have a rare congenital disorder called Chiari I, that causes the back part of my brain(i cant remember what that parts called right now , tired!)to push onto my spinal cord. in actual reality it doesnt mean anything, the doctors wont do anything because the only way to 'fix' it is major surgery and unless the patient is having like massive neurological symptoms such as loss of feeling in limbs from it, they dont do anything. It just means from my chiropractors standpoint theres certain adjustments he cant do very easily. I dont know if that affects his ability to treat me well or not. The same goes with massage therapy, although Ive read that that in particular is good for fibro patients. Unfortunately the end matter always comes down to cost.. The money just isnt there, for any of them on a regular basis, much less all of them. And military doesnt cover them as medical practices so all of those, while I consider them medical treatments and valid, they arent covered by my health insurance. As to the hormone levels, that may be the one I havent had done. although in the multitudes of testing and medications ive had, I may be incorrect there. what sort of testing are you speaking of? Right now the migraines dont even seem to be the entire problem. The days i dont have migraines, im so tired and sore I cant hardly move. So the massages and chiropractics , even if they helped that and i could afford it, i need to figure ouit the best way to slowly rebuild my tolerance for physical activity. Thankyou for your suggestions. Im curious what the hormone treatment is. And i do think that chiropractics(when its the right chiro) and massage therapy are valid treatments and helpful.. jsut expensive for one like me who has narrow-minded insurers. > Nina, > I haven't tried yoga or meditation, but have you thought of > chiropractic care?
