Guest guest
I have been hearing alot about ABA therapy lately and I am trying get better educated about it for my son who is in a Broward EH cluster in 4th grade and needs additional behavior interventions. Is this something that the public school offers, McKay and Charter schools, or is it something that is only available from private practitioners? Can it be written into an IEP if the public schools offer it? And, I'm guessing the health insurance companies don't cover it. We don't have MedWaiver but we have CMS. Guest guest
CMS (through Medicare) does not cover ABA, only Title 21 CMS covers ABA. Insurance companies do cover ABA if you are from a large group policy. As far as I have been able to tell, public schools in FL do not have ABA trained staff to implement the programs. Some private schools do offer ABA and they also accept McKay. If you want or need your child to get ABA while at school then you will have to go the private school route. Guest guest
We do have Title 21, I forget that sometimes and simply call it CMS. It is new for us, and I guess it is important to make that distinction. I spoke with Palm Beach schools this week and they told me that they use the " ABA Model " . Does that mean it is a diluted version of ABA or their own methodology that is comprised of several different models? I'm asking because I'm trying to decide between public, charter or McKay for my son who has severe behavior issues and it has been recommended by his psychologist and psychiatrist that he receive ABA therapy. Is the ABA Model in public school 'good enough' or should he have actual ABA. I'm really confused. I would value any input. > > CMS (through Medicare) does not cover ABA, only Title 21 CMS covers ABA. Insurance companies do cover ABA if you are from a large group policy. Guest guest
you are correct regarding ABA therapy coverage through CMS title 21. Our agency has been able to work with some children within the Miami dade public schools as well as private schools. CMS title 21 coverage of ABA therapy is through the university of Miami behavioral health. You can contact us at for information on how to get services through CMS 21. Guest guest
I am not familiar with PB Schools but I would recommend doing a center-based or home-based ABA program with a BCBA. Severe behavior issues may need a more intense program of 15 to 20 hours a week (maybe more). You need to have your child assessed by a BCBA to see what they recommend. Those are my humble suggestions anyway. If they use an ABA model (whatever that means) at school well that is great, but I highly doubt that it will be enough.
