Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Mailman Segal Institute, the Fischler School of Education and Human

Services, and the University of Miami-NSU Center for Autism and Related

Disabilities at Nova Southeastern University have received a Quality of Life

grant to provide accommodations and supports to the Florida EcoScapes exhibit at

the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale.

We are looking for 20 children with autism, ages 6 through 12 years, who are

nonverbal or have minimal verbal skills. Children should not be able to carry

on a conversation with others, but may have some single words or short phrases.

All of the children will be able to visit the Museum of Discovery and Science

two times with a parent or guardian at no cost. The children will be randomly

assigned to either the experimental group, who will receive visual supports and

augmentative communication strategies on their second visit, or the control

group, who will not.

The study will serve to obtain pilot data about the effects of providing

accommodations to individuals with disabilities to make their community

experiences easier for them and more enjoyable. The effects of providing

supports on children's behavior, communication, and engagement will be studies.

Parent satisfaction with the museum experience with and without supports will

also be compared.

Each parent will receive $25 for each visit in order to cover the cost of

parking and wear and tear on his or her car. The Museum of Discovery and

Science will provide free admission for you and your child.
