Guest guest
Hi All: Well, on Friday, I don't know what happened, if I pulled or strained my back somehow, but with the fibro, I was in severe pain and could barely move (sit, walk etc)....Made an appt with my family doctor, who was no help whatsoever...First thing he said was, well, we don't really know if fibro is a legitimate disease/condition! When all bloodwork, tests, etc are normal, doctors just say fibro cos they can't think of what else it could be...He then tells me, well, just eat a healthy diet, and exercise...I told him, how can I exercise when I can barely move? No answer...Then he told me to drink a glass or 2 of wine at nite...I told him I don't drink anymore, nor do I smoke, and I do eat a healthy diet and exercise, and guess what? I'm still in pain! He reluctantly gave me a script for a muscle relaxer and a few percocet....He was ready to send me on my way, when I asked if I could have a referral for a rheumatologist....I couldn't think of anything else to do, and he really pissed me off... The rhuemy appt is not until May 22.....I hope he has some better answers for me than this schmuck! in PA **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. Guest guest
Oh ! I think I'd find another family doctor! Ours is a clinic, I usually see one of two of the providers there and they believe in the fibro. In fact, my rheumy gave me lyrica only; it was my PCP that said you may experience break-thru pain who gave me robaxin and naproxen (which I can't take now because it irritates my kidneys) and darvocet. I use the robaxin when I'm having spasms and minimal pain and the darvocet when I'm having all-over pain. You should call the rheumy's office and tell them you'd like to be considered for an earlier appt if someone should cancel. Having to wait until May sounds tortous to me! They always have cancellations and keep a list of folks who will take an earlier appt. It may help and can't hurt, right? I hope your back feels better soon. I know heat helps my areas of pain out and they have those awesome thermacare patches that cover a large area and are warm/hot for at least 8 hrs. Plus the salonpas, but I'm not sure they make big ones of those. Jeanne in WI Thanks Jeanne...I am going to just deal with it the best I can with the pain meds he gave me, heating pad, rest, etc....I only take 1/2 a percocet a day, which I should probably take more when the pain is this bad, but I don't want to run out.....There are times last summer that for months I had no pain at all, was swimming, etc...This winter was the worst for some reason, and I live in NE PA and it is still very cold and damp here... I will look forward to my rheumatologist appt and hopefully he will be more competent! **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Watch the video on AOL Home. Guest guest
What a JERK. This is just the kind of imbecile we need in this world. FIBRO has specific and real symptoms. The dumb A$$ obviously does not keep up with any kind of medical research. Those kind of people just tick me off to no end. hugs, Debra V. Guest guest
, where in PA do you live??? I heard those same kinds of remarks back in the late 1980's but the AMA now lists Fibro in the big book they should all check!!!! It has been a recognized condition since the middle 1990's!!!! When and where did he get his MD training? and how old is he???? I do think I would look for a copy of the PDR and copy the pages about fibro!!!! So nice when they bury their Blank, Blank heads in the sand!!! Does he not watch TV??? Has he had a visit from a drug rep for the company that got FDA approval for Lyrica???? I think I would be very tempted to call the company --- I can't remember who has the rights to that drug, but they need to send a rep to your doctor!!! And yes, I know there is this ongoing concern about the conflicts between the drug companies, the docs, etc. But unless the reps see THE DOCTOR sometimes they don't even see the material. (front desk can be told to screen material and the may 86 it! (I.E. in the trash.) And I realize I am biazed as I have worked in the pharma industry, but with out the reps, many docs wouldn't know. And I also have to wonder how many years it took to get Lyrica approved by the FDA. My question about PA is because I live in a Pittsburgh suburb and have also lived in the Philly area. So know of docs in both areas. > > Well, on Friday, I don't know what happened, if I pulled or strained my back > somehow, but with the fibro, I was in severe pain and could barely move > (sit, walk etc)....Made an appt with my family doctor, who was no help > whatsoever...First thing he said was, well, we don't really know if fibro is a > legitimate disease/condition! Guest guest
I just have to make one more comment about the doctor --- ask him if he wants to walk in your shoes for a month???? They make me so angry when they say the things that I used to hear in the late 1980's! At least part of the time when I lived in Chicago and had a new resident every 18 months or so, they were all determined they would find the cause!! And my doc in St. Louis, while she didn't buy the fibromyalgia as a reall condition, she knew that I was in pain --- I will never forget the day she barely touched the area around my sterum and said " I know you are in a great deal of pain, you almost went through the ceiling!!! " And I hardly felt the touch! So, she and her partner were always trying to find something that would help ease the pain, if nothing else! Oh, and I saw a list somewhere in the past two or three days about drugs pulled from the market --- I found it interesting that the ONE I could take on a Saturday morning, work all day in my yard and garden and never have any difficulty, was on the market for only a year before the drug company pulled it because dentists (I think were the ones who were mis prescribing it!!) If only someone would buy the patent and tweek it, it might just help more people than it ever hurt --- it was one of those that supposedly caused liver damage. And I either have a cast iron internal system or my body doesn't react to many of the drugs that can do liver damage because I have taken so many things. (I got the call from my doc to stop taking that drug back in the 1990's, but since I only used it on an as needed basis, I used them very sparingly and never told anyone). But it was interesting in the list of drugs that had been removed, the one that worked for me was the ONLY one that was taken off the market volunterrially by the company in ONE year. Well, now that I have expressed my opinon about the FDA, I am going to bed and perchance to sleep and dream. > > , where in PA do you live??? Hi : I live in Northeastern PA, the Pocono Mtns...About an hr and a half from Phila.....This doctor did mention Lyrica, but I didn't want to try it at this time due to the side effects (weight gain, swelling,etc.)..But even though he mentioned it, he still didn't seem to believe that fibro was a " real " condition...Just something that they say when they can't figure out anything else from normal bloodwork (kind of like chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.) which I know of 2 doctors who don't think that is real either! He is affiliated with Geisinger (if u have heard of that), and is about late 30s,early 40s I would say...He spent most of his time telling me how I shouldn't have any pain meds cos I didn't want to become a drug addict, and how all the doctors in his group agree that you shouldn't have pain meds unless you have had major surgery or cancer! That's insane to me...He seemed to brush my pain complaint off as I was lying or it was not that severe... This is the same group of doctors who gave me antibiotics when I had a cold/bronchitis in Dec., and I didn't take them cos I knew it wasn't bacterial (and they agreed), so then why should I take antibiotics un necessarily and build up a resistance, if I really need them in the future... Plus when I had shingles 3 yrs ago, they didnt diagnose it correctly for 2 wks ( I was there 3- 4 times), so I didnt' get the anti viral meds on time...Finally they gave me the anti virals and it subsided quickly..I also had to go back 3 times until they gave me a pain med that worked.... I just feel like I have to go in there, telling them what to do, what to prescribe and diagnosing myself......I will see the rheum in May and see what I think of him...I don't go to the doctor often, only when something is very bad, so I don't even trust any doctors at this point.. **************Create a Home Theater Like the Pros.
