Is it possible that your son needs more salt in his diet? The skin has a salty

taste to it and he might like the taste. Maybe a multi-vitamin would help. A

simple blood test can check his thyroid and/or adrenal function to determine if

he has a thyroid or adrenal problem. Sometimes that can make a person crave

salt. With our kids, there are so many compulsive things they do, that this may

just be a symptom of OCD. I hope this helps.

Hi ,

Our son, now 5, has been biting into his hand

for years, whenever he gets exited (positive or

negative emotions) to such an extent that his

skin on top of his hand became callous like his

foot soles. The only advice his doctor gave us was

to smear his hand with an untasty cream. We

never tried that. At school the gave him a rubber

tool to bite into, that didn't work either. Over the

last year or so we notice that his hand biting

becomes less and less prevalent. Maybe

you too, should just wait it out. Hopefully,

you'll get more tangible advice on the list.

Sincerely, Mike Wintzer

My little one has recently started chewing his shirt and sucking his thumb. He is 412 now and has never sucked his thumb until now. I sent off a MOAT test last Monday suspecting bacterial and fungal infections in his gut....a chronic issue for him. He is a sensory seeker so it may just be oral motor issues, I don't know, but it is driving me crazy! We have used Nystatin before when we first started doing HBOT therapy as that will bring on yeast issues, but the Nystatin worked pretty good for that with no side effects.

Please help.. my son is licking his hand...

In my personal experience with my 9 year daughter on the spectrum, children

diagnosed with autism often like to put all kinds of things in their mouths,

including fingers, hands, toes, whatever. I think this is a form of self

stimulation (stimming) that occurs because of the way our children process

information. At age 9, my daughter has cut back quite a bit on putting things

in her mouth, but she still likes to touch objects, including other people's

feet, to her lips and nose. I think of this as her using her " antenna " to

experience the world. Does your doctor think your son has a fungus because

there are symptoms of a fungus, or just because of your son's licking behavior?

It seems like putting an anti-fungus medicine on areas of his body that he will

probably lick is not a good idea. Feel free to contact me offline if yoou want

to talk.

Does he have an OT? It may be an oral exploratory behavior and he may need a chewy or some deep proprioceptive input. Ask his OT or speech person if you have one otherwise one of us OTs on this list will suggest a few other ideas.

Hi ,

Licking meets several sensory needs. It is light touch and triggers the hair follicles which is a great sensory experience. Also putting your hands in your mouth is a form of deep touch that is also sensory. Both of these stimulate the tactile or touch system. Most children seeking this input are under- responders and seek extra sensory input. Yes, OTs see this all the time. I will usually recommend for parents an intensive sensory program addressing this need first. This may include a deep lotion massage to the hands- arms- legs etc. I would also include a firm lotion massage to the face. This can be done as part of an oral motor program, sitting in front of the mirror with your child in your lap facing the mirror. It will be important to give him increased sensory input to his mouth to "wake up his mouth" this would include using a z-vibe, active tongue exercises, and blowing exercises.

In case you are interested we are giving a free workshop this Saturday and will be covering the different types of sensory behaviors and how to treat them. It is on increasing attention-focus and self regulation.. but it is all about sensory behaviors. It will be at the broward school Board- 9:00 to 3:00. I was going to see if would let me send out one more notice to parents. If they might be interested.

Hi,

I replied to you last week, explaining that my daughter used to like to put her

fingers, etc, in her mouth but had pretty much stopped doing it. What I should

have also mentioned is that she benefited greatly from lots of OT, which she

continues to receive regularly. I would think this would be a more appropriate

therapy then your doctor's suggestion of using fungicides on her skin.

Does he receive OT? sounds like he needs deep proprioceptive input. I have bought & used tubing that goes to fish tanks (new of course) it looks like oxygen tubing but is less expensive and have tied it loosely around a child's neck like a necklace and have taught the child to chew on that. Other parents have used chewing gum but schools don't allow it and if there is a swallowing problem, you don't want to promote it.

This could be a zinc deficiency. Do you use a DAN doctor?

He does get OT and we have used chewies in the past but he is just not interested in them. He used to love his passie but we took him off of that when he was 2 years old. I have thought about chewing gum but I am afraid of the choking hazard. I will try the chewy necklace, maybe he will grab that and chew it instead of his shirt collar. Thanks

He gets at least 70 mg's a day of zinc as he takes a zinc supplement twice a day and one of the other supplements he takes three times a day also has about 10 mg's of zinc in it.

We were able to get gum put on my daughters IEP as a replacement option because the chewies were not working and they got dirty and unsanitary at school.  This started in a Broward County schools and the was followed through in our palm Beach County school w/o question.  It has been like that for 3 years and we still use the gum as an alternative to her putting other things in her mouth.  It did not stop the problem altogether but it greatly reduced the concern with time.   She also has PICA which may have been the reason they allowed for the gum now that I think about it.  It was a much better alternative than glue or paper. It couldn’t hurt to ask the school if they would be willing to make this allowance…present it as a safety need.
