Guest guest
I haven't been on much lately. It's not been the best of weeks. I've been trying to catch up & thought I'd share my experience today. So, here's one I'm sure you can all relate too. I went to a follow up appoint. w/the endocrinologist this morning. The 1st visit I actually saw the nurse practitioner, which was fine...she was nice. But today I saw the actual dr...he was not so nice. First, let me say that I went to an endo. to begin with because I have a lot of " hormonal imbalance " type symptoms that go along with all the fibro crap, so I thought I should get my thyroid, etc. checked out. I know a lot of us do have problems with our thyroids or with weird hormonal fluctuations so I wanted to at least get to the bottom of that...since there is no bottom of fibro to get to. Anyway...I went in there all prepared w/my list of questions & symptoms to not forget. When he finally asks me what's going on, I tell him " ok, I have everything written down here. " He says " I don't like that. " Then mumbles some jibberish about knowing what my symptoms are...not having to write them down...blah, blah. Long story short, he shoots down EVERY SINGLE question or idea I had by telling me that my bloodwork doesn't show any abnormalities. He didn't so much as TOUCH me, let alone do any type of examination... & my friggin hair is FALLING OUT! That, he says " you can live with. " Oh ok, I'm sorry, nobody told me that you only treat people with LIFE THREATENING symptoms! What the??? And the sudden extreme breast tenderness...he says " see your ob/gyn. " Well, hormones cause breast tenderness correct? And endocrinology is in fact the study of hormones right? Well then, who's not doing his job? It just went on & on. Then this one's my favorite...he says, " you've got to stop trying to be your own doctor. " AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? Then I'd had it. I told him that I HAD to be my own doctor because no one else was doing it for me & no one is giving me any answers & I KNOW that somethings not right with my hormones! After I freaked out a little, then he said, well " we can check your estrogen if if would make you feel better " ...but he said " feel better " as if he was just appeasing a crazy woman. And he also then offered to prescribe me a very low dose of Synthroid to just see...if it made me " feel better " ...because... & now he admits it...that my thyroid is in fact a little on the low end. See, early on in this conversation I'd told him that my only real diagnosis so far has been fibromyalgia. I saw him make a little note on his paper & I knew that was it for me. He had me pegged & there was no getting through to him, so I eventually gave up. He handed me my scripts, looked at me & said " try to relax a little. " <insert tons of swearing here> Don't you absolutely HATE that when they ASSUME that it's anxiety that is causing your problems? If you're a woman, have symptoms they can't explain, have everything written down, do your own research...it has to be coming from anxiety or depression or hypochondria...it couldn't possibly be that they're just not listening, not doing their job good enough, letting us suffer needlessly through maybe non-life threatening but certainly not non-life altering symptoms. Oh, I wanted to punch him so bad! But I didn't. I just left & I won't be going back. Ok, I'm done. One question...anybody have any luck with Synthroid? Don't know if I wanna try it. I'm afraid of side effects. Thanks for listening, Kandi
Guest guest
Kandi, Sorry to hear you had to go through that with the idiot. But from my own experience, I would have told you to stay 1,000 miles away from him. MOST Endo's are USELESS. I have hypothyroidism and was on synthroid for 11 years - only went down hill from there. Most people do. Now, find yourself a D.O. doctor to work with you on your thyroid issues as most of them are more believing and use more natural/alternative treatments. I am on Armour thyroid and it is doing wonders for me. Armour has been around for over 100 yrs - NO SIDE EFFECTS!..but takes lots of work with you and your doctor to find the correct dosage. Go to: www.stopthethyroidmadness.com web site and do a little reading on thyroid problems. And find a new doctor, that one is worthless. IF you have any questions, let me know and I will be more than happy to assist in any way I can. Good luck. Guest guest
Kandi, I feel your pain! Last fall my Neurologist sent me to a pain management doctor. I waited only a short time before this man came in. He asked me, " what brings you in today Ms. Bunt? " I started to tell him and he shushed me! He said I am reading your notes........Okay! I sat there in shock and he NEVER touched me or asked me any other questions. He told me you need therapy and the water aerobics you are doing is a waste of time! WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING? He left the room and the nurse walked in with instructions for my first therapy. It was in a town that was further than the town ALL of my doctors are. I told her I AM NOT going there.....and I asked her if he had prescribed me any pain medication. (I was hurting so bad it hurt just to talk) She left the room and I heard her ask him and he said, " She is on enough medication she is not in pain! " OK??? I came in walking on a cane, crying in pain and he wants to be an A**? I left the clinic and never returned. I told my Neurologist about his actions towards me and he could not apologize enough. I also reported this jerk to the Hospital in which he is affilitated with here. I really do understand what you are saying. You go to these doctors for help and there's only a few that really really listen to you. Don't go back! You don't have to take that from him. Guest guest
Kandi, Do you have any type of Dr. that believes in your fibro? If so, why don't you read Dr. Teitlebaums books and see if your dr. will help you do the program. The first thing they check is your thyroid, and to him, testing on the low end of normal is considered not normal. They will also check your adrenals and other hormones. Guest guest
Sounds very familiar to my experience with the pain specialist. At least he admitted to me that he is more of a spine doctor. like if you have disk problems or something like that. Totally useless. As with you. physical therapy. I've done the physical therapy before and the only thing that felt good was the electrode thing (like a big Tens unit) and the heat that they put on me. Of course, one I left the office I was in pain again.
