Guest guest
I'm looking for a private school for my 14 year old aspie and for my 11 year old autistic kid. I live in Davie. I'm planning to use the McKay scholarship. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.
Guest guest
Have you looked into Kentwood Preparatory school on 61st and in Davie? It is meant for kids with Asperger's, ADD/ADHD, and high functioning autism/PDD. Some parents have told me that they are not strong in academics though. I think the tuition is about $20k so McKay will not cover it all.... Good luck. > > I'm looking for a private school for my 14 year old aspie and for my 11 year old autistic kid. I live in Davie. Guest guest
Check out The Divine Academy. It is close to you in the Davie City are on University Drive off of Stirling Rd (it's either off of Stirling or Sheridan, not sure now). Tuition is pricey, though, commensurate with Kentwood. I would recommend against Kentwood. Based on my research and what I've heard, I believe they deal more with behavioral issues. > > > > I'm looking for a private school for my 14 year old aspie and for my 11 year > >old autistic kid. Guest guest
I didn't see where anyone recommended American Academy at American Heritage, Broward Blvd at Flamingo. I have no direct experience with the Academy but my youngest goes to American Heritage and it's an outstanding program. They are a participating McKay school. It might be a good placement for a high functioning student. You can find a listing of all the McKay participating schools sorted by County here: http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/Information/PrivateSchoolDirectory/Default.as\ px?prgmtype=2 Steve > > > > > > I'm looking for a private school for my 14 year old aspie and for my 11 year > > >old autistic kid. Guest guest
Visit www.divineacademy.com, they are very good in all aspects of the word. Nobody is more important to us than our children and if we respectfully demand the most of our children's abilities, most of the time the educators are more than willing to work with us and our children so that they can meet their potential. Good luck. V. Shashaty, R.P.A.REAL ESTATE LEADERS, INC. (o) © (f)avrvp@... To: sList Sent: Tue, April 19, 2011 12:11:02 PMSubject: Re: Middle School for Aspergers Kids Check out The Divine Academy. Guest guest
My son attends Academy for HS and they provide great academic support and the staff is patient and caring. The only problem is that there are no services there so parents have to arrange speech, OT, social skills, etc on their own. I love the school but may have to take my son out for that reason. They have Aspergers and HFA kids there and it's a safe environment. I didn't see where anyone recommended American Academy at American Heritage, Broward Blvd at Flamingo. Guest guest
American Academy has no problem kicking a child out of school if they don't measure up, have any kind of behavioral issue or fall outside the narrow margin of " acceptability " defined by the school. It is a good school for the small number of kids who can behave appropriately. Kentwood is a great school to get behaviors in line, but it is doesn't come close to providing the academics our kids need. Every year your child will fall further and further behind. > > > > > > > > I'm looking for a private school for my 14 year old aspie and for my 11 year > > > >old autistic kid. I live in Davie. Guest guest
You might want to ask the school board if they provide those services in a private Mc Kay school I know they did in Tampa where we came from. Guest guest
I toured the American Academy in Plantation and WOW what a school. It is a dream. I felt like I was in a mini college campus. But $26,000 per year for a 7th grader (fees are different for all grades) is a LOT of money. If the student is very high functioning they probably only get about $11,000 so parents still have to come up with about $15,000 plus uniforms and books. Guest guest
Unfortunately, all you can get (if your child qualifies) is one hour of speech per week. No OT or PT. And you have to provide transportation to one of the few public schools they offer it during after school hours.
