Guest guest
Hello Group I have a question for everyone. I have a teenage son with autism/epilepsy (non-verbal) and he has been having episodes of vomiting. It started as a real illness that he did have i believe his Gastroenterologists said he had gastritis and gave him some meds for it. But He's been still vomiting. I took him to the ER twice and they ran every test known to man on him from injecting dyes in him to check all his organs to blood samples and so forth and they got nothing all test were negative. But now i have notice the vomiting has stopped but he is making himself vomit by sticking his fingers down his throat. He did it in my car yesterday and he did it in the house a few hours ago. i'm not sure if this is attention seeking or not. I'm just so confuse and i'm getting sick of going to the hospitals I don't want them to think i have Munchausen by proxy syndrome or something i'm just worried about him he has lost tons of weight from it. But since our last hospital stay (last Wednesday) after they put him on a IV drip he has gotten his strength back and eating everything in site ( he wasn't eating anything the first few weeks when all this vomiting started,he was actually sick) i'm just confused. Oh and the times he was actually sick every time before he was about to vomit his forehead would get all wet and clammy like and so would his palms. Now when he's doing it (vomiting)that doesn't happen. Just thought it was worth a shot to see if anyone every experience this. Thank you so much. Guest guest
Is it possible he is making himself vomit because his stomach is upset? Perhaps a papaya enzyme or absorb-aid tablet with meals or even a glass of ginger ale with his meals would help. If he is taking Risperdal, you may want to have his thyroid tested, and do a test for diabetes. My son started vomiting then ended up in the E.R. with extreme sugar levels while on Risperdal. The sugar was elevated and his thyroid had slowed down. I know he is non-verbal, but if he is able to comprehend what you are telling him, and you decide to try papaya enzyme or absorb-aid, it may help to tell him it is a rather strong pill to help his stomach. For some reason (even if it is a very mild pill) if I tell my son it is strong medicine, I get better results. Hope this helps. Glenda > > Hello Group I have a question for everyone. Guest guest
My 10 year old cycles (behaviors that repeat on and off) with making himself vomit. It's a sensory thing. He isn't sick. In fact, he's rarely sick. He just enjoys the sensation (and I think the negative attention) for some reason. This last 'episode' lasted about a month. Now, he partially sticks his fingers in his mouth, looks at you and laughs and spits. Guest guest
Hi, my son who is 11 also does that in cycles. He coughs and makes himself sick. I think he does it to get attention or to get out of doing something he doesn't want to do. If I tell him that he cannot because it's a rule that you are not allowed to vomit in school or at therapy, etc. it may stop. Or I need to give him an incentive, like if you don't vomit for x number of days, you can go to game stop, etc. He also does the same thing with chewing the neck of his shirts. These things come and go. I feel for you, the vomiting is very very upsetting and unpleasant for everyone involved and can be dangerous for their bodies. Jane Strange Behavior or Maybe not???? Guest guest
papaya enzyme? is that at a health food store? also which brand do you recommend? It cant hurt. I spoke to another parent and she said her son does the same thing its a sensory thing. it a bit odd but she said they like the attention i guess plus my neighbor who's a retired school teacher use to teach autistic kids and she said that she had a student that use to do the same thing....very werid.oh well i just have a few more result from his gastro coming on Wednesday and that will tell me what's what consist of testing his stool for parasites, h pylori , and other stomach situations and or viruses that can cause this type of problem. Thank you so much for the response but i look into those enzymes and the ginger ale. Re: Strange Behavior or Maybe not???? Is it possible he is making himself vomit because his stomach is upset? Guest guest
It sounds like you have ruled out the biomedical so it could very possibly be behavioral…as you are hearing from other parents. Vomiting usually gets a strong reaction and so many of our kids stim on this kind of reaction.(My kids do!) If you can ignore the behavior as best as you can w/o any reaction. Get it cleaned up and when he does something positive, give him a strong reaction for the positive behavior. Over exaggerate it so he’ll want to see it more often. Easier said than done but it could be helpful if you can be consistent with this intervention.  From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of trayseaiii@...Sent: Monday, April 25, 2011 12:44 PMTo: sList Cc: autismsara@...Subject: Re: Strange Behavior or Maybe not???? Guest guest
You have both a biomedical issue and behavioral going on at the same time. The biomedical issue is that he vomits very easily which means he is VERY acidic. If not he would not have the ability to just stick his fingers down his throat and vomit like that. Since he discovered that he has this trick in his pocket and it gets your attention, he's using it as a tool. It would be better to take a look at what going on with him with his pHs to help fix the acidity problem because most of the time it's not just a gut and diet issue, but an issue with metabolic and digestive enzymes as well as having enough minerals and electrolytes to have a buffering system for the kidneys. In other words, if he has the right minerals and enzymes this should prevent him from having the ability to just vomit on demand. Shifting the pHs in a person doesn't happen over night, but over time. If you want further information you can contact me... www.pHtestlab.com Badillo9@... Hello Group I have a question for everyone. Guest guest
, I am not saying this child does not have a biomedical issue but i don't think you can say he does have one because he can vomit by sticking his fingers down his throat. My son can vomit by coughing and he does not have a biomedical issue; also people with bulimia can make themselves throw up by sticking their fingers down their throats too. I just don't think we should draw medical conclusions like that without examination. My 2 cents. Jane Re: Strange Behavior or Maybe not???? Guest guest
When someone is making themselves vomit, it is a serious health risk and needs to be addressed right away. The key is to have medical professionals and behavior analysts work together. The medical professionals can determine if there is a biological component (there could be a biomedical reason making it easier for him to vomit) and the behavior analyst can determine the function(s) of the behavior so a plan can be written to address it. The behavioral literature has many studies on what is called " voluntary emesis " in developmentally disabled individuals. Usually (as what might have happened in your son's case) the behavior starts due to an illness and continues in part due to what " payoff " the individual got from the behavior. It could be sensory, attention(some individuals like attention from even doctor's, nurses or ER staff!), or avoidance since he has been kept home from school. Most likely it is a combination of " payoffs " . Please contact me if you would like help finding a behavior analyst near you that has experience working with this kind of behavior. It usually does not go away on it's own. Jean Bachrach, BCBA Clinical Director Reaching Potentials > > Hello Group I have a question for everyone.
