Some other good books are:

When My Autism Gets Too Big - Kari Dunn Buron (story and self calming

strategies)

Be Quiet, Marina - DeBear (A girl w/Down's Syndrome and a friend)

Rules by Lord (About a girl and her autistic broher) This was a really

good book

A good book for siblings/ cousins, or kids in a mainstream class with a DD

child to read is: Let's Talk about It: Extraordinary Friends - by Fred Rodgers

and Jim Judkis

Glenda

Thank you for the list of books; I'm always searching for new materials on ASD or just learning how other parents cope and try to learn from their experiences and hopefully try their techniques on my daughter.

Thanks again.

,The best book and the worst book I read on autism are both the same author, Maurice (a pseudonym). Her "Behavioral Interventions for Children with Autism" was wonderful, full of good advice, techniques, etc. But "Let Me Hear Your Voice" led me to believe that an intensive ABA program, plus speech and OT, would lead to a recovered child. It didn't. From: Soto

,

Thanks for sending me these book tittles; I will add this to my reading list. I will be very busy reading. I'll definitely read both books; but since you gave me a heads up I know what to expect on the 2nd book.

See that's what I don't like about certain author making statements like these: "Leads to a recovered child" I think they need to re-phrase the statement or not make any.

Parents are looking for answers and help and making statements like that doens't help.

Thanks again for the book tittles.

Have a great day

I remember crying when I read "let me hear your voice" and tried to get Robin as my daughter's speech therapist. She was busy but lead me to another fantastic therapist, Barbara Zuckerman who helped my child's to relearn what she had lost before the autism struck. I also have the Behavioral Interventions book. As with anything, each child is different and some interventions work and some don't, the same with various therapies. I agree that "recover" or "cure" are not words that are realistic, however, I also think that someday we may hope that the words become a reality.

I agree with .

I would not recommend "Let me hear your voice" to any parent, especially parents of a newly diagnosed child. The author (who has remained anomoyous and her kids) basically discribes how "determined" she was to fight this, and how she got all this intensive behavioral therapy for her 2 kids (not just one) and now they live happily ever after. She made it sound so easy.

Honestly, my child is now 11 and we have met many ASD families along the way, and I know of NO ONE that has recovered. Yes, some have gotten better, and have made some good strides, but they are still autistic. Period.

I don't have any books to recommend right now, but whatever you do decide to read, please stay from the "happily ever after" tales. Stay with the ones, that "educate" on all the treatment options out there, so you can look into what you think will work best for your child.

Good luck.

On another note, can anyone recommend any autism books speficallly for kids going through puberty and aggressive behavior? We are now on this chapter of my child's life. I wish I could tell you all it's get easier, but sometimes it doesn't. :(

I know two kids who have "recovered" from their Autism diagnosis. Neither of their parents think their kids are cured, but after careful evaluation they have lost their diagnosis. If you do not have faith and hope then you have nothing. Not every story has a happy ending, in fact most do not whether Autism enters the picture or not. Be kind, compassionate, and serve others and the Lord will will provide. That is all we got. Good luck to everyone on this emotional roller coaster called Autism. I think my child is a blessing Autism and all. God knew I was going to be a really good mother so he gave me a child that not every mother could raise. I do my best to raise my special child in a way that will make God proud so my story will have a happy ending. I pray that yours will as well.

Here are two book recommendations:

Austism and Computers-- Herskowitz

Awesomism-Suzy

The first is a practical guide to how technology can assist children diagosed

with autism. The second is a spiritual guide.
