Guest guest
How to " be intimate " when you have diabetes or a blood sugar imbalance. It's a taboo topic... But this is really important because nothing drains your joy like a less-than-satisfying sex life. And recent studies confirm that diabetes can certainly put the kibosh on it. Researchers at the Chicago Medical Center recently studied 2,000 patients aged 57 to 85 to discover how diabetes affects a variety of sexual health problems, including erectile dysfunction and low sexual desire. They found that diabetes can be a real drag on sexual performance and enjoyment -- and that goes for women, too. Female difficulties include vaginal dryness ... difficulty achieving orgasm ... and an increased risk of yeast and urinary tract infections. But men may suffer more... Uncontrolled blood sugar levels and increased belly fat (due to insulin resistance) can lower a man's sex drive severely. This may also be caused by low testosterone -- and many men with diabetes also exhibit testosterone deficiency. (I'll be discussing this in a future issue because some studies show that testosterone supplementation alone can not only increase your sex drive, but also reverse Type 2 and actually protect you from heart attack and Alzheimer's.) Three common causes of ED... In addition to low sex drive, men with diabetes have a higher incidence of erectile dysfunction (ED). This usually occurs because of insufficient bloodflow to the area -- or when damaged nerves hamper the blood vessels' ability to get and maintain an erection. Another common culprit is high blood pressure, the condition almost all diabetics experience. The very good news... Very often, simply reversing insulin resistance will correct ED and rescue your sex life. So if you're starting to incorporate some of the tips I've been suggesting in these Ezines, you're already on your way to a more satisfying sex life. (That's true for men and women.) Sometimes " the blues " are responsible for low sexual desire -- and it's quite common for people with diabetes to suffer from mild depression. If you think this is happening to you, here are three tips that can help... Go fish. Make sure you're getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Do this by eating fish and/or seafood 2-3 times per week -- or taking a good-quality fish oil capsule (1,000-3,000 mg daily). This will help reverse insulin resistance, too. Take a sun bath. A 10-minute daily dose of sunshine will boost your vitamin D levels -- and can lift your mood. If you can't sunbathe, take 2,000-3,000 i.u. of vitamin D3 (which also has a beneficial effect on diabetes). Get moving. Regular physical activity can be as therapeutic for mild depression as an anti-depressant. Studies show that simply walking for 20-30 minutes a day can lift you spirits and pull your sex drive out of the doldrums. Don't forget to talk! Even though a medical condition might be causing your lack of interest in sex, it easily can feel like rejection to your partner. In the long run, it's much better to talk about what you're experiencing. Opening up can reduce misunderstandings, bring you closer, and help you get a solution much faster. Remember what you're missing Sex is one of the greatest pleasures in life. No dessert or " sweet treat " can possibly make you feel so good -- or be so beneficial for your health and happiness. Remember that the next time you're tempted to cheat on your diet. (In a way, it's like cheating on your partner.)
